 Hi again...new problem is this--I tried to update my AVG program to the new one and it froze up. I couldn't do anything...not even close it. Had to log off to close the program. I tried to update again and it told me that there were errors in the download. I tried to scan and it wouldn't scan anything but also wouldn't stop scanning nothing. AVG said it was scanning but no files were being scanned. I tried to click stop scan and nothing happened. When I tried to close it a window popped up saying 'a program is running and can't close'. Does any of that make sense? Because it is confusing me...lol

Do you mean a new virus database? I've had it happen before where the database download would lockup, but I guess it was just due to traffic, as it was okay a little later.

Give it a while and try again.

Alternately, download the update from this website.

I had tried to download the new 7.3 Free version and from this website. Is there problems with it? Or should I just wait and try again? Haven't tried to scan or try since that happened. Thanks.

I just tried (using Majorgeeks 2) and it downloads just fine.

:) Thanks...just downloaded AVG again and it worked fine also. I guess the old saying is true 'If at first you don't succeed try, try again!' (and be patient)
    LOL.... bttrflydaisys

    Re: AVG freezes/new/windows security??

Maybe it was too easy???? LOL My windows security is saying (once again) that AVG is turned off when I log on. (which I totally forgot to mention was happening before) When it did that before, I opened it and tried to scan, that is when the AVG program froze up and was scanning nothing. I haven't tried to scan this time cuz I'm not sure if it will freeze up again. Any suggestions? bttrflydaisys

    Re: AVG freezes/new/windows security??

    Follow the steps below!

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal
If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better.

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

Ok, here goes on my findings. I ran everything there was to run in the tutorial except the following....HSRemove, alternative scans and when I tried to download the MSJAVA removal tool I got a 'cannot find server' message every time(tried to get it a couple days ago also). Also in safemode I couldn't connect to the internet.

These are some questions about stuff I discovered while in safemode:

    1) I have a file called 'Mahjong Quest'--when I tried to delete it(I have already uninstalled it--it was a demo) access was denied for MAHJONGNUM.tff--what to do now?

    2) CWShredder encountered a problem first run, then ran fine second time.

    3) Aboutbuster's log says--No ADS found--attempted clean of temp folder--Pages reset...Done.--Is that normal?

    4) I don't have RPC Helper but I do have 'RPC Yes' & 'RPC Yes Locator'--are those ok?

5)In my add/remove programs I have these programs 'Java 2 Runtime environment SE v1.4.1-SE v1.4.2_05- & SE v1.4.2_06'--- Are all those neccessary?

    6) Whenever I am in safemode my homepage is changed to google.com--my homepage is normally msn.com.

I also ran HJT in safe mode(Hijackthis.log) and normal mode(Hijackthis 2.log)--hope you don't mind but I am attaching both.

I hope you can help with these(which I'm sure you can..lol)... Thanks bttrflydaisys

Please follow the directions I gave you and get the proper version of HJT. And post a log from it. Only run it in normal mode unless otherwise requested. Do not use about:Buster unless you have about:blank or HSA hijacks as stated in the READ ME. That is the reason for your home page being reset to google.com.

The READ ME says only to worry about EXCACTLY those three services mentioned. So leave the other RPC's alone. They are part of Windows.

You already have the proper version of Sun Java running. You do not need to uninstall anything.

Where is the 'Mahjong Quest' file. Are you sure that's the full name of the file? Is it a file or a folder?

  I am so frustrated!!!! and I am sorry. I can't figure out how to get my HJT log to save with the .log extension. I did the scan and save but no extension. I know I am doing something wrong.
I think the Mahjong Quest is a folder with a subfolder named fonts. Can't figure out how to get rid of it. I downloaded a free demo of the game from a game site but have uninstalled it since.
I didn't do anything to the RPC's or sun java. Got rid of aboutbuster.
I have done everything that was in the tutorial.
I have changed my browser to Internet Explorer from MSN. Was not happy with MSN. It was always going down. Would like to try Mozilla that you all like, how do I go about doing that? (from beginning to end, please?)

Now I am wondering how to get an updated flashplayer. Updated Macromedia Shockwave but can't seem to do the other update. Any suggestions?

    Again I am sorry, bttrflydaisys

Sorry again but I forgot to ask this....Is the Teatimer with Spybot needed? I read in another thread that not everyone reccomends it and does without it just fine. thanks

Hijackthis automatically saves the log file to hijackthis.log by default. If you do not see the extension then you did not do step 3 of Getting Prepared in the READ ME FIRST.
You do need to change the file each time you are going to upload it here though because you cannot upload the same file name again. So when the window to save it pops up, just change the hijackthis.log to hjt1.log. And then the next time, use hjt2.log etc.

Run Windows Explorer and right click on th Mahjong Quest folder and select delete!

You can download Mozilla Firefox from here: Mozilla Firefox
Just install it and let it import your Favorites from IE.

What does this mean "can't seem to do the other update"?

Ok, will try HJT log file again. 'Other update' means the up date for Flash Player 7...it says it is downloaded successfully but still can't load flash games.
I've right clicked the folder and subfolder font in Mahjong Quest several times...I keep getting Error Deleting file or folder--Cannot delete MahJongNum.tff: Access Denied..etc. When I ran search and went thru opening folder and subfolder font It gave me another file named Mahjong Num which I tried to right click and delete but got same error window.
Also, do I really need the teatimer with Spybot program?
I clicked on the mozilla firefox link and nothing happened--no download window, nothing...could my security settings be to high to do that? cuz I am really getting confused about this and why it is happening...haven't had these problems before.

    Thank You, bttrflydaisys

Did Flash Player 7 download or did it download and install?

Are you the Administrator of the PC? Are you logged in with Admin priveledges? Do you own the Mahjong stuff. You may need to right click on those files and take ownership thru the security tab. Did also try deleting from safe mode?

No you do not need Spybot's Teatimer.

If you could not download Firefox from that link, then you do not have download priviledges or security is set too high. Did you play with them for some reason? Set them back to defaults.
