Well, free AVG is not what is used to be. People are switching to Avira Antivir or Avast. Many forum malware experts recommend this switch, actually.

But you could try to reinstall AVG.

Also run a couple of online scanners to make sure that it's not malware trying to shut down your security program. For example Kaspersky and/or ESET NOD32.

Edit: I like F-Secure's online scanner the best. Only is it incredibly slow. Five hours or more in my case. But in the end this one will find the problem if no one else did, - in my experience, that is. Also Microsoft's free online Windows Live OneCare safety scanner can be very useful. It can repair files, install updates, remove obsolete registry keys and malware. The latter is not it primary strength... :D

Will it let you run it in safe mode?

I uninstalled it, but it did lockup once while uninstalling it, but i was able to reboot my pc and then try again at unistalling it and this time able to unistall it and now i'm using avg free edition plus ashampoo firewall,a free firewall program (it's one i used to use and never had problems with it) also adware 2008.

So the problem is solved now and AVG is running like it should?

Edit: I realise now that you've gone from the payed version to the free. Not quite satisfactory...

One of the problems with version 8 is that AVG is no longer simply an anti-virus program. It is also an anti-malware program. If you already have an anti-malware program monitoring this will create problems.
The next major problem with AVG 8 is that it added a toolbar and a safe web search feature which really dragged computers down. They had enough of complaints that there is now an option in the latest version, under custom install, to not install the toolbar nor the safe search site feature. You do however have to know that you must select custom install rather than the default install. Since most people won't do this, they will get stuck with the slow bloated version.
