AVG picking up trojan hider.mpr and others

    Hi, I think I picked up a trojan a few days ago, AVG was continually triggered by a file at c:\users\name\appdata\local\temp\tapksfhe.sys

    and showed either trojan hider.mpr or WinNT/ramnit.gen!A.

    It's stopped a few programs working (Origin and Battlefield 3 and probably a few more as AVG continued to pick up alerts from files in other directories)

    I've run all the tests and supplied the logs, any help on this is greatly appreciated as this is my work machine as well as gaming machine!

    Cheers in advance for any help offered.

    I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

    Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

    OK, I noticed the other thread with same virus type and have already run TDSSKiller.

    The MBR check seemed fine

    Thanks for being so quick.

    Before we begin I want you to disable Spybot's teatimer function from running.

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    Ask Toolbar <--- Uninstall this junk.

    If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in our list of HJT fixables further below:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 203.232.208.116:8080
    • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [obwjiysn] C:\Users\Jeremy\AppData\Local\owahxhjnh\qdpknnatssd.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
    • O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [quqyjfbx] C:\Users\Jeremy\AppData\Local\hprbquiro\xcfewrfshdw.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\users\Jeremy\AppData\Local\{FFFA2FB9-4857-4475-8379-F36343DA5801}
    Folder::
    c:\users\Jeremy\AppData\Local\eiwqffcb
    c:\users\Jeremy\AppData\Local\owahxhjnh
    c:\users\Jeremy\AppData\Local\hprbquiro
    File::
    C:\Users\Jeremy\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\325cq8r6ceko405fg
    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "MooDpilr"=-
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "obwjiysn"=-
    "quqyjfbx"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "combofix"=-
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-368243077-3042641958-3619524338-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run]
    "MooDpilr"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Ask Toolbar <--- This is still installed. Please remove it.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 203.232.208.116:8080 <--- This proxy setting remains so I presume you set it yourself deliberately?

    C:\Users\Jeremy\Desktop\malware removal stuff\MGtools.exe <--- Should be directly on the C:\ not where you have it.

    The fix did not work, I don't think avg helped. Then again, Ramnit is hard to get rid of. :( Try this.
    Run this and attach the results.

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

  7. garglesand

    OK Ask uninstalled, it was named something different in programs and features, so I thought it had been removed.

    I haven't set the proxy that I can think of but have just put it back to no proxy in firefox settings.

    I had run ESET before and it found 19 instances of virus they were removed and all seemed ok until I reinstalled Origin and then Battlefield 3. On trying to run BF3 I immediately got the same alert from AVG.
    I think an infected trigger file for the virus is in the BF3 folder (or at least in the installation files as removing the game from Origin still retains all 15gb of the main files) and maybe some other program folders too.

    I remember on first noticing the virus on Monday, AVG brought up alerts from bf3 files, bf2 files, bf2142 files and I think my sound card folder.

    Anyway, I'll run ESET again before I shoot off to work, I know it takes a while to do.

    OK, run twice and no threats found so no log either.

    I'm going to switch this pc off and await anything else you can think of, as I thought I had got rid of it before but it reappeared.

    I had also deleted all folders where the virus showed in the previous Eset log.

    I'll just use ipad to watch forum now until I hear from you next.

    Thanks Kestrel.

    Just had a quick glance, the proxy is still there, and Ask Toolbar still installed, and it looks like Ramnet is still there too sadly.

    I am going out for dinner soon but will be back later on. We can try for another fix, and if it fails, it looks like you will have to consider this:

  16. garglesand

    garglesand Private E-2

    Yeah, I'd rather try again as it's gonna be too much hassle to start from scratch again to be honest if I do a reinstall. If thats my only option left then maybe now is the time to get new PC anyway.

    Now, the logs look good, however, I would like for you to surf around and use the computer for a few days, see how everything is, perhaps give the online ESET scanner another run, and then report back here and give a brief description of how things are. THEN I will give you final steps. :) You have to bear in mind that this is the warning we usually post to people infected with Ramnet:

  24. garglesand

    garglesand Private E-2

    Reinstalled some of the games and used the PC quite alot over last few days, I'm using AVAST now instead of AVG. ESET hasn't shown anything on last few scans.
    I'm hopeful it's gone but still have a nagging feeling that it's there, just waiting to be triggered again!

  25. Kestrel13!

    Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

    You can run MGTools.exe if you like and attach the MGlogs.zip as usual. I can have a glance through and let you know if anything bad is visible. With Ramnet, it's usually easy to spot.

    No, everything looks good. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
