AVG scan results confusing me?

I regularly run AVG Free and AVG Anti-Spyware and noticed today that there has been a change that I am concerned about? c:/windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe has been changed.
PC is Win XP, Dell Dimension 3000 - no major problems that I can see (still have freezing on connection problem which Chaslang looked at a couple of months ago) This is not my concern here though, it is the fact that there has been a registry change.
Any advice would be great.

Have you been updating at Microsoft? as depending on the update it may change some core kernel files, which result in new file sizes and registry changes, and AVs then pick these up and alert.

Have you had any PC issues in which you have run system file checker as that can also restore a corrupted file that results in an AV warning.

Above two are normal occurances, but seem to affect AVG more than other AVs.

Thanks for prompt reply. Yes I have downloaded from Microsoft, only security updates though. I will monitor the AVG for anything unusual as I stopped the system scan when I saw the 'change'

ntoskrnl.exe may well have been updated in a security update.

I have just completed AVG free and AVG spyware scans - nothing detected at all.
