avg uninstall problems

  1. Hi Guys...

It's been a while since you fixed my last problem.

I've been trying to downlod the new AVG 7.5.

I'm only on dialup and the download time is over 2 hours. As the phone line usually cuts out, this is becoming impossible.

I then tried to UNINSTALL AVG alltogether and go for a free Norton set-up.

When I go to Control pannel/add-remove programs and try to remove AVG, I get the INSTILATION Failed message.

Upon clicking on that pop-up I get:

Installer initialization failed due to following error:
Error: Initialization of the language file "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free" failed.
    General failure.

Frustrating!!!! I can't get it or get rid of it!!!!

    Thanks,

    Miss T.

You say your phone line keeps cutting out - is this because of Call Waiting? If someone tries to call you, the internet session often does drop out but the phone doesn't necessarily start ringing after that. You can disable Call Waiting permanently by lifting the handset of your phone and punching in the right codes, OR you have your computer turn it off for the duration of your internet surfing.

Lift your handset and type these codes to do these things, after which you will get a message confirming what you just did:

    Turn On Call Waiting *43#
    Turn Off Call Waiting #43#
Check if it's on or off *#43#

To have the computer signal that Call Waiting should be disabled until you come off the internet, add *44 (yes, 44) to the beginning of the phone number dialled to reach the internet. For example, if you were dialling Bigpond the number is 0198308888 and you would change it to *440198308888.

Then I would suggest following some instructions for CCleaner to get rid of all previous installations of both AVG and Norton and try again. You may want to consider downloading AVG again if you think it may not have downloaded correctly.

Also, I find the best time for downloading is in the very late evening or first thing in the morning - better speed normally so the download wll be finished quicker.

You might want to try this: Click on Start > Run > Type in chkdsk /f/r

After that runs, try to uninstall or install and see what happens. This was the only way I was able to install 7.5 after 2 months of trying and frustration. I couldn't install or uninstall before that, in fact, I really didn't think it was going to work and I just tried installing without uninstalling the old version and no problems, it just worked!!! :)

The only way I could download the new version to my dial-up computer was either to do it overnite or use a download program like StarDownloader. Hope that helps! :)

Ah, dontcha just love dialup. ;)

A suggestion, get a friend on broadband to download it for you.
Then transfer the download to a USB stick and copy it to your PC. Bazza

  6. Guys, Thanks for all your help... I'll get started.

It isn't call waiting though, It's our crappy phone lines here.

I'll let you know how I go.

  7. The latest!

The low level uninstaller gave the same response as above.

I tried copying in chkdsk /f/r and got the same response.

Stardownloader just takes hours (literally) to kick in.

And I thought computers where supposed to save you time!

Haven't really got time to get a friend to download to a usb stick as I'm heading to the States for a modelling assignment in a couple of days and I've got so much to do.

Just don't want to return home to a burnt out machine.

I'll keep trying, and once again thanks for the offers of advice.

  8. Arrrrrrg!

Now when I hit the AVG shortcut on my desktop and choose ‘run’, I get:

    Extracting…..
    Extracting…..
    Etc
    Etc
    Etc
    Etc

    Then: CRC failed in setup.Ins
    Unexpected end of archive

Antone else feeling like dumping AVG?... But just can't do it!

Whilst you get anti virus sorted (take a usb stick with you to the States I'm sure you will find Broadband there). There are a few things you can do.

Firstly the single biggest step you can take for security is to avoid going online as an administrator. Set up an administrator account for adminstrating the computer and then demote your normal account to limited user. Over 75% of malware can't function in a limited user acount.

Secondly use an online email, or use the webmail version of your current one, and remove suspicious email at source.

Thirdly turn you email client to text only.

Fourthly turn off all automatic updates and manage them manually.

Fifthly turn off or uninstall MSN messenger, or if you must use it, set it to NOT start with windows in its preferences.

Sixthly turn off messenger (this is different fromMSN messenger)
    start>controlpanel>performanance&maintenance>services
scroll down to messenger in the right hadn pane and choose disabled
(You don't need this unless you are on a network, but it provides a route in for hackers)

    Seventh disable remote administration
    start>controlpanel>performanance&maintenance>system
    remotetab>uncheck enable remote assistance.
(You don't need this unless you are on a network, but it provides a route in for hackers)

This plus your firewll will give you
Also It's not that expensive to buy a CD, compared to anything else. I often say to people "would you ask to garage to only put water, not anti freeze in you car for the winter to save money?"

    Hope this helps
