I absolutely despise the new version of AVG (aka AVG2011), and here's is yet another reason to remove it ASAP if you're running it on your PC... it appears that a recent update is causing all sorts of problems with people running 64bit versions of Vista and Windows 7. More info:

I strongly suggest that anyone running AVG2011 (or the older versions of AVG such as AVG9.0 or 8.5) remove them, and install one of the following free antivirus products:
    Avast http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avast_Free_Edition_d1968.html
Avira AntiVir http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_FREE_Antivirus_d955.html (my personal favorite)
    Comodo Internet Security http://www.majorgeeks.com/Comodo_Internet_Security_d6234.html

I would also give a "thumb down" to the new AVG, I have had problems with it on XP, Vista and Windows7. dlb's post on alternative Antivirus is good, I'd recommend the Avast instead of AVG, haven't had any problems with Avast.

Meh dlb, you are about 30 minutes late with this!:banghead After ignoring AVG's requests to reboot for about a week, I just did and lost my network.:cry I haven't read the articles that you linked to yet either, hopefully there's something there that can help.. Why does it have to be networking? That has to be my worst 'skill'!:(

roflmao Me too!! I can do some basic networking like sharing a printer that's plugged in to the PC in the home office so that the laptop in the kitchen and the PC in the bedroom can all print to it; I can set up basic drive/file sharing (but usually takes a bit of swearing several visits the the MS Knowledge Base LOL ), but that's about the extent of my networking "skills".

Seems like me losing my network was a coincidence as my W7 X64 is working just fine ATM except for that bit unlike those poor folks who have their machines in a reboot loop. *sigh*

Just to clear things up here, it was not AVG's fault that I 'lost' networking. It was the proverbial PEBKAC error since I forgot to turn off the power on my other machine that is currently benched and removing the dummy plug to install to my main machine caused it to lock up. Thankfully, I didn't blow up my new GTX460!-o:-o:-o

Anyways, I was going to remove AVG as it is, mainly due to perceived bloat but with an i7 @ 3.8GHz and 6GBs of RAM, this really shouldn't bother me. Let's see what dlb's favourite, Avira brings to the table as I haven't tried that one yet. I hope it works as well as AVG and Avast! have so far. (2 infections caught in their attempts in 6 mths.)

BTW, one bad update should not a decision make.;):-D

I would be inclined to add Microsoft Security Essentials to the list of possible AV programs. I have been running it for a year and absolutely no issues. ;)

However, I can't find a fix for the PEBKAC issues, augie!!! :-D:-D

I gave MG readers warnings about this earlier in my thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=227770 Post #3

MG Off Base published the warning. :major
I included it in my daily post as a warning to the readers of my column. ;)

I've been thinking about adding MSE though I am reluctant just due to the fact that MS has a huge bureaucracy. I hope the elves that churn out the updates don't have too long of a chain to get through before we get them. Besides, having the fox watching the chicken coop rattles my nerves a bit.;)

As to the PEBKAC issue, it's going into a case tomorrow, I'm sick of starting the machine by shorting out pins on a header!:wine (Actually, that's a tall glass of non virgin Clamato Caesar + some extra Tobasco, it's all downhill from here.;))

I have been advising against using AVG for a long time. I even had warnings about it in the How to Protect yourself from malware! link where after version 8 ( yes that long ago ) came out I moved it way down on the list. I even had multiple warnings about it. Then eventually I just removed AVG completely from the link since it is just too problematic to recommend.
