    Hi,
My avg antivirus wouldn't load up, and I found that I could not repair or reinstall it because files were missing. I tried to install avast, but after it installed the executable was deleted and it wouldn't open up. Windows update also doesn't allow critical updates to be installed. For some reason the attachments buttons don't work so I pasted the hijackthis log below (sorry if this is a no-no):

Edit by chaslang: Inline HJT log removed. READ & RUN ME sticky not followed.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Problems with installing or updating software are not typically problems related to malware and that my be the case for you too. And note that I highlight typically. That's because some malware can do many strange things to antivirus programs, including stopping it from running. I will give steps below that you must follow if you want to pursue a malware course of action.

First however, I suggest you just uninstall, REBOOT, and then reinstall AVG. Does that work? Can you get it uninstalled?

    Malware Cleaning Steps

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

whatever it is is delecting executables from whatever anti-virus i install. It deleted the spybot executables before my eyes as i reinstalled it.

Please just work thru all the steps in the procedure and get us results from anything that works. I would expect that you should be able to several items for example:

    - Ccleaner
    - GetRunKey
    - ShowNew
    - HijackThis - make sure installed and renamed as requested.

Just keep in mind that the more your try and the more results you actually can give us in the way of actual logs from the scans, the greater the chance we can help you.

It was a rootkit that was blocking the installation of spybot, avg, avast, etc. I needed to use Blackllight to identify the hidden processes and rename them. You can't imagine my relief when I was finally able to install spybot and not have the executables disappear immediately from the folder. The malicious hidr.exe application removed safe boot from the registry and prevented any kind of security measure from being installed or loaded. Hopefully it didn't do major damage to the registry but windows xp is running fine as of now.

You really should complete the whole process we gave you. This particular infection often comes along with other problems. It would be in your best interest to make sure all malware has been removed.
