AVG & ZoneAlarm

I have a simple file server in the office running XP Pro, all it is used for is as a file server and an email server. I occasionally have a problem in that AVG free does an update and the ZoneAlarm will not give it access to the Internet because the program has changed, this effectively locks the machine up so it can no longer collect emails and I can't get into the machine from home to view emails. When I get into my office it's a simple matter of ticking the box on ZoneAlarm and clicking on allow, then the emails start downloading and everything is fine again.

Does anyone know of a workaround on this or alternatively a good firewall that I can replace ZoneAlarm with.

    TIA.

All good firewalls will stop a changed program, unles you give it unlimited rights.
Most can be configured within the firewall, under rules.
You would have to set it to allow access to and from the net, on all ports, create the rule for such.

I use ashampoo free firewall, at the moment - does exactly the same when AVG, becomes effectively a new program.

Also, don't forget there is a brand new version of AVG free out now, v7.5, replacing the old v7.1 (no longer supported).

That might have been the one that caused the trouble, I guess. :D

Yes, That's the latest bigbazz, and still free version, and as I said, my Firewall (Ashampoo Free Version is very good, and nice to configure the rules) did exactly the same, on that update. No problem for me, but for a server, yes - Still should not happen to Scousetech for at least another 6 months.

Reschedule your daily updates for AVG to when you are at home to be able to update ZA.

I have to laugh, I always like quoting "The obvious often eludes us", and there you go - simple , as augiedoggie says, Set it to update when it suits you !roflmao

I had a feeling that I was going to have to do manual updates to get over the problem :( Oh well...

They'll still be automatic. AVG can be scheduled to do the automatic updates as often you like and whenever it is convenient for you. I've set mine to evenings, when I'm home, so I can tell the firewall that it's okay to let AVG connect. It's still automatic; it's not like I would remember to click "update" every evening by 8:30...
