AVG9 resident shield wont work

Hello...I run avg on all my computers...the free version. I also have windows xp...and we use windows firewall..ccleaner...malwarebytes.advanced systemcare3 and smartdefrag on all as well...all do not on run on start up...I recently uninstalled avg to install the new version avg9 and it works fine on my computer but I can't get it to work on my hubby's laptop...the resident shield will not work. I've gone to the site and done what they say...check the resident shield box and the recheck it and rebooted it...still nothing...the only way I can get it to work is by uninstalling it everyday and reinstalling it...I'm not doing this everyday anymore...this is ridiculous...can anyone tell me what the problem is? I'm not getting anywhere with AVG itself. He has everything I have on my computer as well so I dont get it. Or...should I just put a different antivirus on his laptop and if so which one?
