And it's not like a codec issue, I have ffdshow and could watch .avis/xvids in winamp with no problem whatsoever up until recently.

Then randomly tonight, I try to play an .avi and there is no playback whatsoever...the file loads in winamp, as the time is displayed, but the time does not progress. I don't know what possibly could've changed to make this happen all of a sudden like this...it's always worked for me in the past.

No major changes have been made to my knowledge since I last was able to play .avi's fine in winamp...the most is downloading itunes and a few music torrents...and I downloaded a few programs to convert mkv videos the night before.

so could this be malware? I don't see any other weird/new symptoms. If not, what else could it possibly be? It's like it refuses to play them. btw all other file formats that worked before still work...its just the .avi's.

Thanks x1,000,000 in advance for anyone who can help me get it back to the way it was!

Oh btw some information that might be significant (it won't like me edit my original post?):
-I did a system restore last night, which corresponds to the loss of ability to view .avi's. I don't know if this could somehow have messed it up
-My computer runs windows 7 64 bit, and has all around good specs in terms of RAM, gigahertz etc..

I can post my hijack this log if anyone would be willing to interpret it, let me know if it could be of any significance.

So the system restore resulted in the inability to play the .avi?

Why did you do a restore?

Can you play these in safe mode? :wave:wave

I don't know if the restore was just a coincidence and something else is causing it...I stupidly did the restore because I accidentally deleted some playlists. Obviously it was pointless, because the files stay the same regardless of the restore.

I will try it in safe mode and post the result. Also, let me know if a HJT log would be useful.

Again, I don't know what caused the change. The only things I did, that I remember, was the sys restore, and downloading some things including programs for file conversion. It could be possible that something shady got downloaded, I did try a few different ones.

    Thanks for the reply

Edit:Just tried safe mode...no luck. Same result. Click the file...title loads in winamp...playback never commences.

Then I would try uninstalling Winamp, download cCleaner from HERE, run this and the registry clean, making a backup when prompted.

Reboot and reinstall the Winamp. :wave:wave:wave

    Thanks for the reply...

I did what you suggested--I already had CCleaner (its a great program) so I uninstalled completely and removed all the registry traces with CCleaner.

A few files wouldn't be deleted, including "elevator.exe" whatever that is.

Anyway, upon reinstallation and testing, the same exact problem still exists. No playback of .avi's...:(

Any further suggestions would be much appreciated..I guess it looks like I may be stuck using VLC for all my video.

Once again, I could post a HJT log if you think that would be of any significance to this problem.

    Thanks
