Avira Antivir stalls at the same file every time

I have used Avira for years and have never seen this happen.

I start the scan and when it gets to a file called A0074688.exe it simply stops. I haven't been able to exclude the file because the program only lists part of the path.

    H:\System Volume Information\...\A0074688.exe

A search of the drive does not find this file nor its attendant folder(s).

I want to reformat the drive to see if this solves the problem but I have not been able to do this. I always get the same message that something is referencing the drive so it cannot be formatted.

I have tried formatting through Windows and DOS to no avail. I also tried Safe Mode and Safe Mode with command prompt. In DOS mode it also asks if I want to dismount the drive and try again but it fails to dismount.

The message I get is this:

I thought that perhaps it was Spybot or something but turning them off did nothing. I also terminated the system restore function for that drive.

I can't figure this thing out. The drive is set up as a slave drive on which I place all non-program files. I have cleared everything off of the drive that was there and yet it still will not format.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    j

Turned off the restore and I still get the same message. All drives are not being monitored at this time.

Did you check the box to stop System Restore on ALL drives?

Yes. I also checked to make sure they were all turned off and they all say "Turned Off".

It is a scratch drive for files only. It is now empty other than the files the OS places on it.

Why would the edit button still be clickable if editing is only allowed for ten minutes? Now that's kinda nutty. Why would I want to bother the admin for something so paltry?

What I wanted to add was this:

    plodr,

I will try the link you posted but I was not able to find the file even with the system and hidden files turned on.

Okay. Now we are getting into "Jim doesn't know exactly what he is doing" territory.

I did what the page stated but there is no reference to a "KLIF" string. I guess that is good.

My problem is that I cannot get to anything that would allow me to use the Copy Path to Clipboard command. I also do not have an issue with closing the scan window in Avira. I simply click "Stop" and it then goes to the "End" window.

I did try the MS instructions for accessing the System Volume Information (SVI) folder but it will not open so I can trace the path to file A0074688.exe. If I can exempt that file from the Avira scan my issues will ostensibly disappear. I also have not been able to get Search to find anything in the SVI folder because access is still denied.

I tried searching for KLIF per the instructions at the posted URL and it did not find that file in the registry at all. I then tried searching for KLIF at every level within the entire registry and it was not found anywhere in there.

    I have another interrogatory.

I have a dual OS system which has XP loaded on the C: drive and Vista loaded on the E: drive. Could the Vista system restore be causing the monitoring problem with H: even though I do not actually use Vista? It is only on this computer because it was the default OS that came with the unit. XP is the default boot OS and the C: drive is the primary boot disk.

Should I boot into E: Vista and turn off the drive monitoring for the system restore?

    Thanks,

    j

jimpeel - those links were not for you. That's why I started the paragraph with Note for myself I go to quite a few forums and offer help. It it easier for me to put possible material for me to study in the actual thread rather than a bookmark on my computer. It makes it easier for me to find the thread and the website with possible solutions.

I doubt it. But if wrong, it wouldn't be the first time I've erred. The problem drive/partition is H not C nor whatever letter the Vista partition is assigned. So to my mind, that Vista partition is not the problem.

I wanted to be sure that H wasn't some sort of hidden restore partition built into the computer.

A linux live CD will let you format the drive BUT to be safe, disconnect your master drive (either by removing the cable or disconnecting the power). You do not want to format the wrong drive! Ubuntu did that to me. Fortunately I had an image but it trashed my mbr and it took me a while to figure out how to repair that.

    Problem solved.

I have no idea how; but I re-uploaded all of the info I backed up from the H: drive and then ran Avira and it completed the scan to the end.

We'll see what happens when I restart the drive monitoring for System Restore.

This is REALLY weird. Welcome to the wonderful world of technology.

Thanks to all for your efforts.
