Avira vs MG Tools: Fight to the Death!

Since the last update, Avira is driving me BATTY: "MGTools...virus detected". I've tried renaming the file ("MGTools2"..."MGFools"...), I've tried moving the file, I've even tried zipping it back up into the archive whence it came. None of which stops Avira from CONSTANTLY telling me it is/they are a virus.

Worse yet, it doesn't seem to be giving me any CHOICE since the last update. Virus detected, choose an action: "A) delete, B) details".

I don't know what type of "action" DETAILS constitute, but suffice it to say, there doesn't seem to be any "ignore" or "quarantine w/o deleting" option.

I've ended up having to turn off Avira wholesale. So frequent were these "announcements" (like every 3 minutes...)

Yes, you need to disable or completely uninstall it before running MGTools. But why are you doing this> have you started a thread in the malware forum?

unless you need it, just delete it. I always make sure i have a fresh copy only when i need it.

Ah, then there is no reason to keep MGTools.

Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.

We are constantly alerting the AV program writers that MGTools is not malware!!! But any minor change we make to the tools tends to make them falsely report it again. :(

well, ideally it could sit there unperturbed. i get online in spurts, hence i DL and keep current all my AV and AM tools whether i use them once a week or once a year.

come time i WANT to use MGTools, i prolly won't be able to get online for a copy!

oh well. if avira won't let it sit there, it won't let it sit there. guess i'm trying to do the impossible.

    :-o

Well, the fault lies with Avira. I am guessing that the latest update is causing this.

We ( or I should say, Chaslang ) changes or adds things to the tools fairly frequently, so you would probably need to download a new copy anyway. You could always download it to a thumb drive or cd along with any other malware programs ( SAS and MBAM ) installation files.

i just need a better way to HIDE it!

    maybe zip-within-a-zip?

Add it to the ignore/exceptions list of Avira, off hand its in the Expert Mode Config options, or when it lists MGTools you should be able to choose ignore so that will add to the exceptions/ignore list.

But as TimW mentiones Chas does change this app alot, so keeping old versions is nto going to help you later on as new malwares and their locations etc will not be covered, plus if you cannot get on the net with that PC them MGTools wont do you any good anyways as its not a removal tool, but a log of locations that mawlare may hide and needs to have its logs uploaded for the experts here to review and find the malware, so no internet = no uploading of logs.

If infected PC has no net connection then, you'll need a spare PC thats does have net connection be that one of yours or a friends, that way you can download the lastest versions of mawlare removal apps and scanners and upload the logs to help remove malware.

It doesn't even OFFER me "ignore" on the popup[!! **

And, in fact, I added it to the "exceptions" lists on Day One.

I cannot say that MGTools is flagging any more frequently than in the past. The difference is that back then Avira could be trained to "forget" about it after the first one or two times. Now it seems to have a death grip on it.

Is there any sort of buzz about the latest Avira being buggy? I must say, it has also flagged on AU (Advanced Uninstaller), which also peeves me.

Anyway, I have removed MGT. Like y'all say, I won't be doing much with it except during those times (like now) when I'm actually online. But I must say, I am not at all happy with letting Avira win like this!

    :(

    -----
** for that matter, it doesn't really seem interested in my input one way or another -- i tried "delete" once on one of the "delete"/"detaiils" popups, and it didn't seem to register either! Just ignores me like I don't even exist and then withdraws the popup after a second or two.

Only to start the whole cycle again in 2-3 minutes....

In order for something to be ignored, it is not sufficient to just click on the popup. It only gets ignored until you reboot. It took me about 2 weeks to figure out what to do.
    1. Right click the tray icon and select Configure Antivir
    2. Check/tick expert mode
    3. Click on Guard, then Scan and last Exceptions
    4. If it is a file, put the full path into the lower address box and click the Add button.

You will not get any more popups about this file.

Just to add to what the others have suggested, you should also contact Avira and let them know what it is reporting on. They usually do respond in time with the programs removed from their list.

I wish! It actually only gets ignored until it NOTICES it again...which is usually in about 3 minutes!

And yes, I do have it entered in the "exceptions" list. Again, is there buzz around about this being buggy these days? It seemed to work in the past.

    Using 10.0.0.561 btw.

I don't know but I've put something in my exceptions list a few weeks ago and have not had a popup about it since.

Put what you want ignored at both locations top and bottom of the exceptions and see if that works.
