avoiding adware

This may sound dopey but bear with me. There is a small program that I want to download but it may contain adware. I have an anti-adware program called Spybot but have never tried it. Would it be safe to save the program to my
floppy disk and run it from there? Thanks!

I would download it normally then upload it to virustotal.com to get their take on it, if it's clear there, it should be safe to use, if there are any positive hits recorded, post the URL of the VT analysis here and we'll try to work out your options.

PS, it would have been faster to tell us what program it was

The VirusTotal scan shows 2 of 49 scanners picking something up. With that small ratio I'd say they are both false positives.

GRC = Steve Gibson, makes some tiny but very useful software, a good coder and very security conscious. That file was "Last Updated: Oct 29, 2005". From VT: Signature verification Signed file, verified signature. (verified signature = a good thing)

From the VT report linked (thanks solaris), I've never heard of the first software that flagged it and never used the other (take that to mean I don't rate either of them highly).

Overall, safe software and 2x false positives in my book.
