I have run the XP cleaning procedure with combofix, spybot, AVG and MG tools as suggeste by this great site, but I still have a nasty Awola bug on my computer. I will try to attach the logs, but AVG stated that it did not create one.

Please help, and thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3 <-- this has not been used for more than 2 years.
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Then install the proper version of Spybot as given in the READ ME. MAKE SURE to uncheck the option for using Teatimer.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsft Windows Adapter 5.1.3013] C:\Documents and Settings\Home\Application Data\zpbfwsb.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [ngm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ngm.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [nhhp] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nhhp.exe
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com
    O16 - DPF: NDWCab - http://www.neededware.com/ndw4.cab
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: khfdbxx - khfdbxx.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: PLSRemote Service (PLSRemoteSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PLSRemote.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
You missed an important part of the READ & RUN ME. You must set your system to Normal Startup mode. You are currently using selective startup mode. Please correct this now. But do not reboot if it tells you it needs to. We will reboot later.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Not completely yet!!!

Did you run the procedure to disable/remove Windows Messenger? I still see it.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

You must allow the scan from GetLogs.bat to run all the way thru to the end!!!! You stopped it too soon and as a result the log you posted is mostly old logs. You shut it down after only the first of 5 scans was run. It only had finished getting an Uninstall list. Please run GetLogs.bat again and do not close the window until you see the information shown in the snapshot on the Using MGtools instrunctions page.

Then attach the new MGlogs.zip file.

ok, i ran the MGtools.exe by double clicking on it and let it run until it stopped, i never got to a screen like in the post you refer to, but it stated that all programs were finished and "push any key to continue". i pushed a key and the window closed.

i then ran the GetLogs.bat by right clicking on it in the MGtools folder. the same process ran, and i came to the same window. i let it sit for fifteen minutes, with nothing happening, before pressing a key.

attached is the zip file for MGlogs. i never deleted the old one. i presumed that the file would be modified by the MGtools program.

    thanks again for your help!

You did not need to run MGtools.exe again. You only needed to run GetLogs.bat as I requested.

You did not need to wait 15 minutes after getting the final screen shown in the snapshot I gave to you. Once you see the text saying the below, it is finished.

*** Scanning complete - Your log file is C:\MGlogs.zip ***

At any rate you logs are complete this time and they are also clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
      • Note: The space between the X and the U, it must be there.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
