    Hello
Below are the steps I followed to create a log. While I wait for the results, I wanted to know if I am missing a step in this process to backup my log so if a file is erroneously deleted I can retrieve it. I see there is a provision to do so.
Secondly, I deleted the desktop icons after creating the log which I find in windows -folder called Trend.
I notice below it says to remove the desktop icons after you hear -did I make an error by removing them earlier?
    Thank you for your time.

Trend Micro HijackThis 2.0.2 to download HJTInstall.exe
    * Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    * Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    * By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    * Click on Install.
    * It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.- disregard
    * Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    * Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    * Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into your message to the expert who will review your log.
DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System, a helper will guide you. When you hear go to program files for folder Trend and repair.
    Delete the two desktop icons

    Hi

By the looks of it your getting malware removal help from another forum? if so best to ask them their steps to HJT as they are very different to our tried and tested method of running HJT, not to say the other steps are bad, just different.

Just running the log wont delete anything you'd need to have in HJT when your told to check an item and fix it will backup the removed files to its main folder, so dont delete it until you are told to do so and malware free. Backups would be in a folder location like this depending on where you installed it to D:\Temp2\HiJackThis\backups (just a example)

As you're likely getting help somewhere else I wont post our removal instructions for malware as its best to stick with one forums removal steps, saves masses of confusion.

    Hello
There is some unintentional confusion. At the 'What the Tech' forum it said to click on the HighJackThis button but then it said it was outdated and redirected me.
It then mentioned Trend Micro as a site to perform HJT but I use your forum with confidence so came here to do so.
However, I tried reading about HJT here and I think it said you don't read the log.
I then went to Trend and followed ther advice, created a log and submitted it to What the Tech as I found no other place to submit it. I am currently waiting for ther response -I think as I have not heard.
I believe, in trying to learn, I have caused confusion; I know about manners and protocol and did not intentionally use multiple sources for which I apologize.
I now have a folder in Program Files called Trend Micro where there is a notepad, but with no checks in front of it.
with Processes etc and a red file with things to do like scan, tools such as backup etc.
I don't know if I should have backed up before as this backup is empty.
I now do not know if I should just wait after having done the steps below or if I could implore you for your help to create a proper HJT following your guidelines.
Thank you for listening I am sorry for the confusion.

    Hi

Reading their guide yes you dont need to determine whats wrong inthe HJT log they will and then will instruct you on what items to check and remove (at that point the backups of whats deleted are made).

Yes the notepad file in the Trend folder is correct its your log and will have no checks infront of them.. its just a text output file from HJT, its that logs text you need to post in your thread over at What the Tech, so you have followed their instructions fine.

Once your log is posted then someone will assist you in what to remove with HJT, they will post steps so easy to follow, it maybe upto five days before you get a reply and this is common on many malware removal forums these days as malware is so widespread and most forum helpers are doing this freely in their spare time.

IF you dont hear back from them quickly then by all means follow our steps on removing malware, which are longer but comprehensive and are found here, but start new thread in our malware forum and give brief outline as to whats going on with your PC be it

    • Is it popups? if so do they have a name.
    • Is your browser being re-directed to a less welcome site?
    • Does your Anti-Virus software alert you to a Virus/Trojan? if so whats its name.

Then attach all the logs gained in the guide as per the attach steps in the guide or here

    Hello
    Thank you for your information.
May I ask if MajorGeeks analyze a log if it created using MajorGeek's procedures or must I send it to another forum.

    Hi

Yes we analyse logs but only the ones created using our proceedure which will result in 5 seperate logs from a few different malware scanners to attach, the MGTools log covers HJT, so a seperate one is not needed. The forum are on Majorgeeks for malware releated questions is here Malware Removal Note: as the holiday period was a particually busy one where malware infections was related the malware experts are doing their best to get to everyone ASAP, so patience is needed, same is happening on many of the big malware removal forums.

What Majorgeeks doesnt do is to analyse just HJT logs, we do it as part of the full malware removals proceedure. Other forums may not accept how we structure and have you run HJT (which we automate this scan via MGTools) so best to stick to a forums specific step by step.

I now understand and thank you for your information. I do not now need a log analyzed. My pc is ok and I was trying to learn more about this HJT which I did.
