Hello folks. I've been going through your procedure of collecting logs in hopes you can assist me in removing this pesky virus I got while visiting an anime video website yesterday. I actually tried removing this malware before I came to your site with AVG and Malwarebytes. I've included the AVG log and Malbytes scan log before I went through your procedure and the scan log after going through your procedure. I'll attach the additional logs in my next post.

I use to visit your website back in my gaming days for demo/patch downloads. I never knew you guys had virus/malware removal support. It's pretty incredible that you guys invest as much time and resources towards helping others. Cheers to you all!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

What you have is a ZeroAccess infection. Do you have your Vista Boot DVD just in case we need it?

    Rescan with HitmanPro
    • When it finds services.exe - Virus, allow it to Replace by clicking the down arrow next to the detection and choosing Replace.
    • Leave any other detections alone (Ignore them).
    • Afterwards, click the Next button.
    • HitmanPro may want to reboot the PC in order for the changes to take affect, please do so.
    • After reboot and when you are back in Windows, run another scan with HitmanPro and then attach the latest hitmanpro.zip log. (See How to attach files)

See if you can get RogueKiller to run. If you can then run a scan and after it finishes, select the Registry tab and then select any of the below that exist and then click the Delete button.
Then select the Files tab and if the below exist, click the Delete button again.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot, run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new Hitman log
    • the new RogueKiller log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Thanks for the reply. I have an image of my hard drive vs a windows disk. Gateway is too cheap to provide a recovery disk I guess. Worst case scenario, I can reload the image.

I ran hitman and tried to replace the services.exe file, but it showed that it failed to delete it. Should I try something else with hitman before proceeding to the next step? I have included the hitman log.

Try it again in safe boot mode. Even if it does not work, continue on with the other steps.

Make sure that you are in normal boot mode before running C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat

Ok, here's the update. Hitman still was not successful in safe mode. I ran Roguekiller and it removed everything but:
    [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : c:\windows\assembly\gac_32\desktop.ini --> FOUND
    [ZeroAccess][FILE] Desktop.ini : c:\windows\assembly\gac_64\desktop.ini --> FOUND

Whatcha think? Have we reached the realm of no hope yet? lol

I uninstalled avg and ran combofix. I'm still getting a warning from malwarebytes that it is blocking a malicious process from starting. The location is C:\QOOBOX\QUARANTINE\C\WINDOWS\ASSEMBLY\GAC_32\DESKTOP.INI.VIR TROJAN.0ACCESS. Here is the log from running combofix.

Make sure that you have disable UAC as requested in the READ & RUN ME FIRST before continuing. Your last MGLogs.zip showed it was not disabled. You must reboot after disabling in order for it to take effect.

Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 31
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Press and hold the Windows key http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/Windows_Logo_key.gif and then press the letter R on your keyboard. This opens the Run dialog box.
      • Copy and paste the below into the Run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks so much for your help. You definitely exterminated this virus. I couldn't update to service pack 2 until I downloaded BITS 4.0 to replace the one I lost during the clean up. I downloaded a firewall and got this pc pretty well locked down now. Thanks so much for your time. I hope you get paid for all your efforts, you seem to put alot of your time into this service :cheers
