Backing up Computers

I have two computers and both are Dells.
The desktop is only a year old and runs on Windows 8.1.
The other is a laptop which sadly runs on Windows XP.

My question is about backing up the system on both of these.
The desktop is eligble to upgrade to Win10 and I have reserved the download if I chose to upgrade.

The laptop has barely been used since they stopped supporting XP. So I have been researching about installing Unbuntu to run with XP, as I have programs on their that are only compatible with XP.

Is there a good (free) program that I can use to back up systems?

Have a look at the free backup program from Paragon.
Paragon Backup & Recovery 14 Free Edition works on Windows 2000 to 8.1, 32-bit and 84-bit.

My Dell Precision M70 laptop came with XP Pro SP3. After Microsoft ended support for XP on 4/8/14 I didn't run XP again until 5/25/14 when MGs listed an article from NT Compatible about a Registry Key that changes regular XP to POSReady 2009 (for regular computers). I integrated that reg key into my XP Pro SP3 and have gotten security updates for XP (as POSReady 2009) ever since, and will continue to do so until 2019 (unless MS pulls the plug). The main thing is, I can still run XP AND go online with it because IE is updated every patch Tuesday along with other updates (last week, there was even an out-of-schedule update). I wouldn't try this with any tother version of XP (XP Pro SP3 only) as I'm not sure there wouldn't be problems.

Don't get me wrong. XP is NOT my main OS. Vista Ultimate is. I also run 8.1 Pro and will be getting the Win 10 upgrade.
