Microsoft word automatically creates a hidden copy of a file anytime you open it. This is so you can revert any changes you make to it.

Does this sound like what's happening?

To disable, click file --> save as
On the tools menu of the save as dialog select save options.
Uncheck Save Autorecover info, and press ok.

While it is possible to disable this function, I wouldn't recommend it. I mean, what's the cost-to-benefit ratio here? These backups only take a very small amount of room, and they only exist when you have a file open. Plus, they save you from having to redo tons of work if you were to make any serious mistakes.

i realized that a temp file was made when you are in it. but these files show up as saved (normal) files after i have already saved and closed the microsoft word document. pretty much i am ending up with two of the same copies of a file all the time. one being "test"(just an example) and the other is "backup of test" does this make sense? thanks
