is it possible to make a backup of windows xp from my pc so i can put it on my other pc which still has just the win98 version that came with it? i dont have an instilation disk for xp because its a compaq that came with win98 & i'v downloaded to update it to xp, i could update the other pc via downloads but im guessing it would be a lot quicker if i can just format it & copy th OS over from an external hard drive.

    Hi

While you could potentially do this, in reality its not a task to try for a few reasons,
    1. is that will the Windows98 based PCs hardware run XP in the first place?
    2. the biggy is that the hardware is likely to be different thus the devices drivers you would clone/image across would be different, ending in many issues actually booting the PC and you you did you could delete most of the drivers and udpate with the ones for that hardware but its not always going to work, I know back in the day when XP was first released their where some that tried this with sucess, but others that didnt.

Sadly you cannot just format it and copy the files from your preview XP installed HDD, I wish that was an option as it would make re-installing Windows easier.

It would be much quicker to re-install XP from scratch if you had an OS disk on that HDD and PC and then transfer your files across, but would need to check that that PCs hardware as in Motherboard, Audio and Graphics has XP drivers available before you start the task.

How did you do that as I didnt know that their was a download available to go from Win98 to XP from Microsoft, but then I may have forgotten of an OEM like COmpaq offered this route.

the pc's are identical make/models actually so wouldn't have had any problems there :(.

i cant remember if it's 98 or 2000 but no its not a single download its a lengthy process of downloading & restarting quite a few times for the many updates, thats why i was hoping to just copy th whole thing. not looking forward to the hours its going to take me..

You also can not use the same XP serial # on both Compaqs, even if they are the same model. I have three Dell Dimension 2400s in the house and each computer has it's own unique XP serial number.

surely you could if you had windows on an installation disk?

Is there a program that will save all th windows settings from my up-to-date pc so i can use them on the other one when i get round to updating it?

No, you can't use the same product key. Activation checks for such things.

You could, in theory, use a backup program like Easus Todo Backup or DriveImageXML to clone your XP hard drive to the other PC's hard drive just to see if it will boot, provided they are identical. No guarantees, though. It might not work.
