I see you provide space on the web for backups, and then there are hundreds of programs out there for backing up your files and systems, some of them quite expensive. Could anyone tell me what's wrong with the Backup and Restore system in Windows 7, if anything.

While on the subject of Backups I used the Windows 7 one this morning, which went fine but there was a problem when I started to burn a CD for the startup disk they recommend. I had an error which was a bit vague in that it mentioned not suitable, and different speeds. The blank disk I was trying to use has this information on it's cover :

    TDK
    DVD R R4.7 Data/Video
    1-8X
    4.7GB Single Sided
    DVD-R DVD Recordable

Many apologies if this has been answered elsewhere but I have visited the links shown and no luck.

Further to the above, is it possible to put the "startup disk" on an external drive?

Is your burner able to burn DVDs? You mentioned burning a CD in your first post but the disk you grabbed is a DVD not a CD.

I would not recommend putting a startup disk (I assume this might be a restore and recovery disk) on an external hard drive. Computers are normalluy set up and can boot from the hard drive or the optical drive. If the hard drive doesn't boot, you put the disk in and boot from that to repair/restore. Sometimes computers will refuse to boot from a USB connected hard drive so manufacturers do not suggest that as an option.
