Backweb from HP updates?

I am running Windows XP Home.
Today, I ran updates from HP as I needed them to update my printer. It would not scan since getting new computer. When I used CD, told me I already had it on computer, just needed to update. So I did. Now I have backweb when I run Spybot S&D.
I did do a search of threads and am still confused about backweb.

Spybot created a new restore point and I thought it had gotten rid of it, but after rebooting and running spybot again, is still there.
Is it a "bad" thing, or not so bad?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Well, I tried totally shutting down computer, then starting back up.
Now, Spybot finds nothing. Doing a search on my computer, there are no backweb files.

Will I have to do this every time I update from HP?

BackWeb is used by a lot of reputable companies like Kodak and HP.

It helps keep your software updated, however it can also be used to collect information about you.

I would suggest you go to the Spyware forum and follow their recommendations to remove it and ensure you aren't infected.

Yes, you probably will. Backweb is an application used by several major manufacturers to deliver updates to your computer. Compaq, Logitec, and Hewlett-Packard to mention a few. There are ongoing debates/discussions about whether it is spyware or not. :)
