BAd memory slot ?

  1. I have a Gateway MX6448 laptop that I just got some new memory for. I will boot fine one either stick in either slot but when I try to use both stick (1Gb x2) It won't boot at all? The lights blink and all and I hear the DVD-rw spinning and fans but that's all it does. I know it's not bad memory since both sticks work in my other laptop that uses the same speed (PC 4200). It supposed to handle 2gb by what the site and kingston says That's all I have between the 2 laptops. I don't have any 256 or 512. Do you think it's a bad slot???
Oh mean to claify a bit...it don't even boot to the bios when both slots of memory are used. Just in case that helps.

    Not even post?

Can you boot into safe mode with both the new memory modules installed? If you can, you probably have a resource conflict with a couple of drivers, and to reinstall you graphics and/or chipset drivers from safe mode should fix your problem.

Have you tried one stick of memory in each slot independently?

R & R the chips again maybe you didn't really have a chip installed as you thought you did;)

? check gateway support for related problems, er even BIOS update for memory support fixes

  4. All it does is come on and the lights for the hard drive flashes and some other light. Not sure which one it is but it don't post. Just a blank screen. And I have tried every memory I have ,they all work and it will post with the memory in either slot. Just when I put two sticks in ......nothing??

  5. What do you mean by "specs"? They are both hynix PC2-5300.That's the best I can say.I assumed that was the right speed since that was in it when I bought it. But Powerleap says PC-2700, Crucial says PC-4200 or 5300??? Kinda confused!I had some PC-3200 and I tried using both slots and it worked...till it B.S on me and then it never booted back up till I took them out and put in the original PC-5300. I wish I wrote down the code that it had but it shut off after a few seconds. But just before it did that the screen started to have red vertical broken lines running on the screen? Could it be possable that the ATI video drivers be conflicting with the memory? Yes I have no idea what I saying but i also have no clue why trying to use both slots won't work

Yes, actually, it can. It happens sometimes when you increase the memory in a large bump, for example from 512MB to 2GB. How much memory did you use to have installed, and how much would you have if both the new sticks worked together?

  7. It started out with one stick of 1GB mem. Upped it -or tried to go to 2Gb but nothing? The only time i got it to wrok is when I used two 512 sicks of PC 3200 in slot on and two. But after about 10 mins...BS. then No boot. So i reinstall the origianl 1Gb of PC5300 and it run now......just R....E......A.....L S.....L...O...W.
TAKES ABOUT 3 MINS TO FULLY BOOT UP! I figured it would run faster than that since it's a dual core CPU.But my old..old HP ZX5000 3.0 is faster at everything than this dual core is??? But it is lighter....rolleyes ha ha
