Bad Virus

I just picked up a nasty virus. It has pretty much disabled my desktop, I'm writing from my laptop.

I want to point out that I did read the "readme and run first" thread, but since my computer will not run anything I was unable to do what it said.

Every program with an .exe or a .dll needed to run gives me an "Application Error" dialog box that says some instruction at memory address "x" referenced memory at "y" and that memory can't be "read" and says click ok to terminate or cancel to debug. Pressing either does nothing but dimiss the dialog box.

On boot everything that attempts to run pops up the same error.

The only thing I can do is navigate folders, and even then I get the same error for explorer.exe first, and then it lets me navigate my folders.

Booting into safe mode does not effect it at all, still does the same thing.

It all started when I was surfing, some page wanted to update some video codecs, I said no and closed the page, but then Macafee piped up and said some registry changes were being made and asked ""allow" or "block", I blocked both of them, but then things started to get weird and no other applications could be started, they all gave application errors.

Anybody have any opinions? Is this a virus? Malware? Or did something in windows crap out on me? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Brian

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Which Windows OS is this PC running? XP? Vista?....

Do you have a bootable copy of your Windows OS CD?

You may have the type of malware that is being worked on in the below link. It can often cause the problems you are seeing of not being able to run any EXE files.

Sorry it is a Dell Dimension 8400 Desktop running XP Pro SP2, I have a current updated Mcafee AV subscription.

I think I do...somewhere. I need to dig it up.

Hmm, I don't know. Mine seems worse. I cannot run ANYTHING. So downloading and running all the spyware sweepers is impossible right now.

I downloaded the "Ultimate Boot CD" on another machine and tried to run the Mcafee off it, but I must be doing something wrong, it doesn't seem to actually run.

Can you point me to any bootable CD images with antivirus?

I have also dowloaded Ubuntu and run it off the CD drive to access the hard drive and save all my important data. So If a wipe and re-install is the only option at least I still have all my data.

    Thanks,
    Brian

If you have the infection mentioned in the link I gave (and it does cause problems like you have too) then McAfee would be useless since in all likelyhood it was already broken by the malware since that is what the malware does.

Yes you do since it may be your only hope.

My favorite is this UBCD4Win You need your Windows CD to make this but it is great. It boots up to a Windows type environment running from the CD and has loads of useful tools. It could even make it easier to fix your PC than it would be using the Recovery Console since you will have a familar Windows environment and Desktop and will be able to navigate around on your harddisk and delete all the bad files and folders since they will not be running when you boot from the CD.

You can learn how to make this CD here: http://www.ubcd4win.com/howto.htm
