I downloaded a torrent and when I went to run it my comp started acting up. Anytime I try to run a program it closes and a message appears saying it is infected. I have malwarebytes and tried renaming but same thing. I can't seem to do anything since nothing will run. My internet still works but I'm on the library's comp for now. Can aynone help? I have windows 7.

Try running the scans in safe mode. Try doing a system restore. Does this happen with all Exe files? What exactly happens? Do they just not run, or do you get the same message that it is corrupt? Have you tried ComboFix and MGTools.exe in safe mode? Have you renamed the scanning tools?

If absolutely nothing will run, then you may need to have access to another computer and create these CD's to try to clean up enough to do all the procedures in the

    Kaspersky Rescue Disk.
    BitDefender Rescue Disk-with-auto-update.

It turns out I had the "windows 2010 security tool" virus. Most of my applications when clicked on would display an infected warning and not run- including system restore and reformatting. I managed to use rkill to get malwarebytes working and got rid of it. Thanks though.

You are welcome. If you want to be sure, attach the requested logs from the Read and Run First.

Sorry again. I tried really hard to do this on my own without bugging you guys but I still need help lol. As I mentioned before I got my computer working pretty good however internet explorer won't work. A message appears saying I'm not connected to the internet- which I know is not true since firefox works fine. I would appreciate any help you guys can give me to get IE working and make sure the remains of this virus are gone. I already ran malwarebytes a few times and it says nothing is infected anymore but I'm not sure.

Then you need to do the procedures outlined in the link I gave you for the Read and Run First instructions and attach the requested logs.

I decided that rather then start a new topic I would continue on here. I'm not sure if what's going on is a new problem or a leftover of the virus I mentioned above. I fixed internet explorer using system restore and upgraded malwarebytes. I now have the full version and have been updating/scanning frequently. But lately I've noticed I'm being redirected to other websites. Note that it only happens when I click on the links. I haven't noticed any ads or other symptoms. The problem started in firefox and for awhile I could access the sites in IE but now it spread there as well. I did another system restore and scanned with malwarebytes but it tells me my system is clean - and yes I have it fully updated with the latest version (the paid for one with real time protection). While it's more of a nuisance then anything else if there's a virus I want it gone. Below is my log from malwarebytes. Also remember that I have windows 7 NOT XP.

You still need to follow the instructions I gave you in the link to the Read and Run First instructions and attach those logs. In addition, do this:

    * Please download TDSSKiller to your Desktop
    * Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    * Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v

    * Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    * When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

I ran 3 scans now. CCleaner, SuperAntispyware and MGtools. Attached are logs from the last 2- CCleaner didn't give me any. TDSSKiller won't run- it says I have a 64 bit OS. The antispyware scan turned up 16 ad tracking cookies and removed them. However the problem still remains.

    Did you set up this:
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 69.163.34.201:8080??

    See these instructions:
    Change Proxy Settings.

Tell me what is happening exactly. If being still redirected, is it with all browsers or must with IE?

Why are you not running any AV program?

Changing the internet settings seems to have done the trick. I don't know much about the proxy settings so I never touch that part. As far as my AV is concerned I had symantec and it expired and they wanted 60 bucks to renew! That's why I got malwarebytes instead. From the "read and run me" instructions I've got all the free scanners now and got comodore so I do have an AV now. Thanks for the help.

MBAM is not an anti-virus program, but an anti-spyware one. And the free version provides NO protection. Please see the last link in our cleanup instructions:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I'm sorry I just keep having problem after problem. I was looking for a file when I noticed many of my system folders are locked. I have a pic attached. I tried changing the settings and even did a system restore. Nothing. I'm the only person who uses this computer and have never made passwords or security settings to lock any folders. Can you help me? Sorry I'm not sure who else to ask. Remember I have a 64 bit system.

I finally figured out the problem. It was comodo - an AV program specifically recommended by this forum. I'm a little miffed here. It locked all my system folders! I uninstalled it and got most of the folders unlocked but the directories are completely messed up. As far as I can tell everything is there but all scattered about. I'm not sure what's going on. I have no idea why it messed with my system folders.

Comodo is a good product but can be a pain to remove. You can either re-download MGTools and run it so that I can see the MGLOgs.zip and possibly remove any leftovers or post in the software forum for further assistance in removing the remnants.

I decided to just to reformat. I have an external drive to back everything up to. I just wasn't sure if there would be anymore problems. Thanks for putting up with me, sorry I've been a pain.
