This is also for Yarwell, ibonkers and others who helped me build my computer.

I'm gonna lead up to what happened first.

My last format contained some of the same problems that I had before the format. I decided that I would format one more time and not use any 32-bit programs, just to see if it helps to reduce the problems that I'm having.

So, on the Suday before Christmas, I put my expensive X64 disk in my expensive BenQ and everything ran perfectly, that is, until Windows was going to be installed. At that point, I heard a very loud snap. I immediately took of the side panel (I don't keep it in tact with screws) and I saw nothing unusual. No burnt odor, no smoke, the 4 red lights and the 1 blue light were on, and everything looked fine.

So, I decided to remove the Windows disk but when I pressed the button, the DVD drive didn't open . . . I tried a couple more times but it was a no go.

So I opened the other side of the case, unscrewed all the screws holding the DVD drive, and removed the drive. I removed the screws on the DVD drive and, what to my wondering eyes did appear, was a broken DVD drive and 8 little pieces of my Windows gear (disk). I didn't cry :major

The words that came out of my mouth would've embarrased a soldier but it was all I could do to make me feel better, but it didn't help because I still had a broken DVD disk and a broken DVD drive. One of the nibs that hold DVD's in place had broken off.

I ordered a new Windows XP Pro X64 disk, which came in today . . . YEA! HALLELUJAH and AMEN! And I used my DVD drive from my old computer to get things rolling and Windows installed with no problems.

As of now, the only original parts that I bought in the computer kit are the motherboard and the case . . . Grrrrrrrrrr! And I'm bankrupt for the next 6 to 8 months. :***

I try to see humor in everything and you gotta admit that its really funny when you get down to it, money not withstanding.

Also, Fred, you were right . . . I did flash the Bios. The new disk has the option so I thought it was safe, but I wouldn't be surprised if I saw a meltdown when I wake up tomorrow, LOL . . .

I hope you all have a Very Happy New Year!

I feel your pain. Had a similar problem with a brand, spanking new gaming rig I recently bought. It transferred all my old files, music (9-10 Gigs worth) and all my picture files and then promptly wouldn't even boot the next morning.

Had to go back to store and swap them out for a whole new critter.

So far, the new beast is humming nicely, but am still wary each time I turn it on, for fear of seeing either a BSOD or nothing at all.

Hope all works well for you, this go round.:)

And Happy New Year to you too.

So when are you going to overclock that beast and switch to water cooling? :D Glad you got it running. Hope you have a great New Year!

Fred, with my track record in building this computer, I'd be better off just buying a Dell the next time roflmao !

I'll lay you odds 2 to 1 that something will go within the next month or two. I'm already having a problem with a SATA HUB . . . nothing is ever easy for me with the pc, but it builds character, right? Hogwash! I'd rather have a pc that runs well than a little more character. :D

    Overclock it? NEVER!

Glad I haven't encountered that little problem yet. Never had a CD shatter, though I had one crack inside the drive. My favorite game too.

Water cooling... yeah, water and computers really shouldn't mix.

But you know what Denise_M? You learned a lot. I love it!;)

6 or 8 months ago, you would have just said the CD/DVD drive was bad, now I see you getting one opened up, and finding a broken disk.

You will be a pro on your next build!

I'm sorry to hear about your problems Gensuknives and Triaxx2. Why don't the computers at work ever have these kinds of problems?

From what I've seen of other computers, I wouldn't want to buy one. If I had known a little more about parts, I would have chosen each one, as I did when each part broke.

There's no doubt that I learned a lot and it was all you guys who helped me, explained things to me, and bit your tongue when I didn't get it, lol. I know much more than I did when I first started building this pc but not enough to put my 2 cents in to help anybody, because I still don't understand why I can't copy my Windows folder to another drive after a format and, if things go bad, put the copy of the Windows folder that I saved into my C drive. That seems so ideal.

This is probably taboo but can I copy my Windows disk? It cost me $155.00 and I don't have that kind of money to shell out. The new BenQ cost me $55.00. Right around the Christmas holidays when money is already tight. I'm looking for my receipt for the BenQ to see if its warranty is still good. I've had it for about 18 months or more. It doesn't hurt to find out tho.

Well, I'm off to slumber land. It was good to hear from you all.

I'm still fighting my last build, a dual core AMD 6 gig. My Dad died unexpectedly before I got it working, so now my boy has a much better birthday gift than I had originally intended (once we get it working).

Learning isn't cheap, but it does pay off in the long run. Just wait until some dweeb geek wanna be starts spouting the crapolla at you, it will be worth all the headaches then.
