just hope they don't send you a big bill for it.

i am in the process of changing my ISP but the modem i have is no good for the new server so i have to wait until some time next week for my HIGH SPEED.http://bestsmileys.com/excited/2.gif

They can't send me a big bill for it. They gave me the bandwidth, and I'm a stupid user who doesn't know how to limit it myself(or so they think ) :D

There is mine. I have 8 Mbps download and 768Kbps upload. My ISP is comcast so they like kick the download speed up for like the first 50 mb of the file and then it goes back to 8mbps. I wish i had fiber optic in my house.

I downloaded at a sustained 1.3 megs a second last night on a 266mb file.

On Comcast, so its not neccesarily the first 50mb.

Mine is about 1mb a sec. Sometimes it goes faster. Hey you have the same ISP as me rolleyes :D

  18. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

    Thats only 8Mbps.

I'm getting faster than that. Sometimes up to 2 meg a second.

  19. pclover

    pclover MajorGeek

Yeah but it depends on how fast the server is to. Once i got 5 MB a sec

latency and lag time on a satellite is way to high for what I want broadband for. Might as well keep my dialup just because of cost at that point.

Satellite through put on VPN connection is only about 57-60k with a very high latency. I get 22k with a medium latency depending on weather. So with a satellite connection I could just over double, almost triple my through put but almost double my lag time. But the price difference is huge. $11 US for my dialup versus $80 a month and having to buy $300 worth of equipment.

This is mine and its on a good summer night connection 26kb/s
but during the day its about 19kb/s. During the winter it picks up to about 33kb-36kb/s I could get wildblue satellite for about $40 amonth for 512kb/s but $300 worth of charges upfront forget about it and no telling how bad the latency will be. I am waiting like 1 and 1/2 years before i can get highspeed (fiber optic lines make it way out here)

Yuck, ATT DSL "Pro" rated at 3mbs down for $24.99 a month. Speeds suck, but at least they haven't complained about my running my download at full speed 24/7 lol.

edit: wow, the US gets killed for average speeds in countries. I wish i lived in Japan!

Much as expected, but down is ALWAYS slower than I pay for. They have of course said in fine print that they offer speeds "up to" 8192. I've never had that speed. A few calls to them about it has led me nowhere. "These are approximate figures and we can't guarantee that you will get that speed at all times, and also, speed varies from time to time and it may be much faster in a few minutes". :banghead

I wish I ONCE could get that fast speed, just to see if it is possible...

I have given up for now. This is the only company that offers cable where I live, otherwise I would change. The rest is adsl and I know exactly how poor my telephone lines are... I was sanding the floor socket a few years ago to paint it, when suddenly it started shining. Turned out the telephone line was embedded in it and hidden under some wallpaper and I had sanded off the cable coating. I quickly stopped sanding and put a coat of latex paint on top and pretended to forget about it, but no way I'll run my puter through that! :D

Funny enough, upstream is always higher than I pay for. Maybe I should get a designated server! :)

I have their fios. Are you on dsl? Anyway, I'm pretty happy with their service so far (quick response and has only been down once...compared to comcast being down once a week when I had them). I've had it for about 2 or 3 years now.

yes, I have dsl and mine still pails in comparison to my sister who also has verizon dsl. In my personal opinion I care not for verizon, I have serious other problems and wavering/limited or no connectivity at all EVERY time it storms/rains and I've only had verizon for about 8 months. It just be my location but when I had RCN I never had this problem.

Btw - my sister has the same problem with the limited/no connectivity when it rains, so it might not be just my location.

to a certain extent I would rather spend $200 dollars a month for tats than spend $50 a month for internet access. at least then I would have something to show for the money. All be it, with broadband I would be more likely to be able to work from home and stuff like that. Which would make me happy.

One of my son-in-laws has his back covered, think it was done in the service, we have a friend who is gradually covering himself with tattoos has a good start and he's only like 25, he is very colorful although most are covered.

In just 5days after saying to my ISP that i intended to change the speeds have increased dramtically from

    UPLOAD 150
    DOWN 113

    To
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/176487644.png

i got a phone call yesterday asking if i would like to reconsider the change but i have declined as i feel they have had a chance to give me a good sevice and failed.

i hope to have my new Modem and ISP early in the next week so when it's up and running i will see.

I didn't want to start a new thread professing my ignorance so thought I'd plop it here.
Kept loosing our connection, called the provider and they ran checks confirming it was weak. They at one point decided they were going to have to trench from the house to the street. The last guy who came asked if he could look at the hook up (which was my feat). Turns out I had a splitter in the wrong place, in his words cutting our speed in half. Although I ran another bandwidth test and the numbers are about the same but have not dropped the connection and it changes sites now at warp speed, and I can access my mail which before would take forever or not at all. :eek:rolleyes:cool
