I was using norton firewall but the subscription ended so i looked into using another firewall. I am now using sygate personal firewall free edition. I am also using a router so that gives me some protection too, but my question is there a simple firewall that alerts of programs accessing the internet and vice versa. I deactivated sygate and ran norton online security check and passed everything indicated "stealth", so is there a basic program that manages activity from my computer to the internet so that i wont be using another full fledge firewall?

    thanks

    ps i'm using win98 se

I use ZoneAlarm Pro and its the best firewall I have ever used, I would never use anything other than ZoneAlarm.

I'm not aware of anything that provides only outbound protection, outside of a full firewall.

I agree with JustPlayin, and wonder why you disabled Sygate. Sygate is about as unintrusive a firewall as I have seen, although I haven't tried Outpost. I ditched ZoneAlarm when I had some problems with it and SP2 on a few computers. :)

well, basically i'm trying to find a firewall that uses very little system resources, since i'm also using a router which provides some protection. Im using outpost to see how it goes, and its getting a lot of getting used too. I agree sygate was prett good, and might go back to it, but it seemed that my connection was slow and my computer. Granted this is not a fast laptop, but i'll see.....

    thanks

speaking only for myself. So far, I have found Kerio (free) to be the best firewall. and it plays well with other firewalls (PC_cillin and XP). Also, speaking from experience, do not install Outpost if you have another firewall installed. I did, and severly paid for it in time and headaches. Good luck.
