Basic printing CD labels question

I'm a bit embarrassed to have to ask this but I've never printed labels for CDs and I really don't know how it works. Yesterday, I burned some CDs for a batch of photos for someone who wanted to give the CDs to certain people. He would have liked to have labels for them but I've never done that, so I couldn't help with that aspect of his project.

First question: Can labels be put directly on the discs? I would have thought that can not be done because labels might be too thick to actually apply to a disc. But, I also have the impression that labels can, indeed, be affixed to CDs/DVDs. Is this true?

Second question: Can label kits also be purchased to print labels to be inserted inside the front of a CD jewel (or whatever they are called) case? Can blank labels be purchased at most office supply stores?

Anyone familiar with freeware to use for either of these purposes?

    Hi USAF

Yes labels can be printed directly to a disk BUT they have to be Litescribe disks and you have to have a Litescribe capable burner, otherwise its print to a label and stick it on the disk sort of job. I lucky I bought a litescribe burner and is invaluable.

Can get many kits for specific printers so whats your printer model and make?
What burning software do you have as some come with CD labeling software built in?

Well, yes, if you don't mind doing a bit of measuring yourself.

Go to www.freeserifsoftware.com and download PagePlus. You can make the input boxes any size you like, line them up however you like.... All you have to do is measure up a jewelcase and set up a window the right size on the screen, then measure the border of the label strips to make sure they're indented right, then copy/paste them so you've got columns of labels, then print them out. I'd do that as opposed to a dedicated label package, because with Page Plus you can print out anything for any occasion, a label package is only useful in one situation, then you might not use it for ages.

    That's what I'd use, anyway!

Thanks Halo and ulrichburke. I feel a good bit better informed on this now.

I visited Brother's website since I have a Brother printer but I found no info about using my MFC-790CW printer to print CD labels.

I've not yet installed any burning software on my Windows 7 computer. I have another computer running Windows XP. It has an older version of Nero. I'll take a look tomorrow but I suspect it does not have such a feature.

I don't want to buy hardware and/or software to do this since i don't see much need for it for myself. The guy I was helping actually bought a kit and I tried to install the software for it on his computer a few days ago. However, we were not successful in installing the software because a registration code was needed and we found no such code in the kit package. I later found some info on the manufacturer's website indicating the code is on the jacket for the software CD. I did not see that when I was at his place because he removed the disc, handed it to me, and laid the paper jacket for the disc aside. I never thought to look at it to find the code.

So, perhaps I'll discuss further this with him. Otherwise, I think he'll just skip disc labeling.

    Hi USAF

Nero is good and many versions do have Label Printing apps built in but if using and older version with Windows 7 do be careful as not all are compatible.

Just this morning remembered one of the apps I have used in the past in Pressit and they still have a freeware version of their app HERE

But I tend to skip as you mentioned in your last line, labeling CDs myself now as I write in CD Label Pen on them instead, kinda quicker in the end, doesnt look as professional tho.
