I had a Texas beer a while back...while a lager...it came with a small chili (hot as hell) in each bottle. For the life of me I can`t remember the name of it...but I liked it.

A friend of mine actually brewed some spicy beer once. It was actually hotter than that hot pepper beer where they have a jalopeno pepper in each beer.

I surely am. I leave Friday morning for Honolulu for my international union's convention, and I'll be there through the 22nd. :)

ant chance of visiting the big island? it would give me pleasure to show you round. aloha

IF we get there, it'll be on a helicopter tour, so probably not (and that's only if we can somehow make it a business trip so the local will pay for it...my business agent really wants to see black sand). I've got a little over 24 hours to myself when I first arrive, and then I'm in the land of the convention right up until I have to sprint for my plane.

I would love to be shown around, but it's probably not going to be a possibility. :(

i suppose. this place seems so far away from the 'real world' but i suppose its really only a click away. i dont have a great deal of material wealth, so poverty at least prevents theft. aloha for worrying.

So the local will pay for it?!?!?!?!?!? Are you kidding?!??!!?!!?!?!? This is where the dues are headed eh? Having been a union man for 15 years I know the perks that business agents get. This is the kinda s**t that has given unions a bad name. I used to feel guilty as a steward involved in negotiations to get a "free" lunch or dineer. Well....union dues pay for that...and it`s ok for the rep`s to get a lunch or dinner while fighting for something as basic as a cost-of-living raise or protecting your medical benefits. But....dammit...suggesting a helicopter trip to "the big island" is overage in a big way...and a perfect, burning, flaming, blatant example of why labor unions have such a bad rep today.

I got some black sand for that business agent....does he drive a Ford or a BMW????

Oh...and I suppose the union is flying you there to begin with? I`ll shaddup now I guess I may have gotten my point across...no wait....what`s wrong with having the convention state-side? Can you say ..."Misappropria...." never mind

Sasquatch, it might be better if you had a clue what you're talking about before you post.

The union is international, the convention (which is held every three years) is bidded upon by the locals for hosting, kinda like the olympics. Last one was in Chicago. Before that, Toronto.

My apologies...I guess what set me off was you suggesting that a helicopter trip to the big island be called Union business. I`ve defended labor unions in discussions for years...even though I am a republican. What I was responding to was the type of thing that anti-union folk have pointed out as abuse of union funds .

Obviously you don't know me, or you'd know that there is no freaken WAY I would ever do something like that. I was joking (hell, we've been joking with the people who pay the bills about all sorts of stuff we're going to do while we're here).

In reality, the international pays for the airfare, and then we get per diem to cover the room and expenses, also from the international. Which is heavily regulated by the government, complete with having to fill out a W-9 to get it, and I will be taxed on it as income. The per diem amounts to the cost of the room + $45. Which if you've tried to do anything in downtown Honolulu, you know covers maybe lunch, or dinner at a chain restaurant.

Now, to get back on topic...last night I forewent beer in favour of mai tis at the bar overlooking the beach and the ocean while the sun went down. Today at dinner I'll try the one LaurieB recommended. :D

Well, I forgot to take pictures of my latest beer brewing experience. Mostly cause I still haven't purchased the cable to copy the pictures from my cellphone camera (which has a better megapixel then my $1000 digital camera I bought in 1996).

Some exciting things have happened with this batch of beer goodness. I've never needed in the past a blowoff tube, which is recommened, but never needed in the past. Well, the pressure in the bottle nearly blew the airlock off the bottle. Anyway, this is all fixed. My O.G. was 1.076, though the recipie stated the O.G. should be around 1.062 - 1.064. So, since I had a higher O.G., this chocolate hazelnut porter, will actually have a higher alcohol content. Anyway, the hazelnut gets added during the bottling process, which will be in about 2 weeks 5 days. After doing my initial O.G., I just want to state that my beer tastes just like a YooHoo (chocolate milk).

O.G. stands for Original Gravity: This measurement is before you add your yeast. Then after secondary fermentation, you take a Final Gravity. You subtract the two and multiply by 131 to find out what your ABV is. ABV = Alcohol by Volume.

    Fun stuff!

Dark beer. Just about any brand, especially the lagers. I do like going to microbrewerys for fun. (Not any around close though.) Over the counter, probably for the money, Corona. :p

    Steinlager Blue or Green, Laurie?

Mine was Green, but I will happily have a Corona and lime here or if in England a Samuel Smiths Strong Pale Ale. If I recall correctly..:)

Which reminds me... Never did find any Steinlager. But I had a couple of bottles of Kona, which weren't too bad. Then I figured I'd just stick to mai tais. LOL :D

Maybe they only sell the blue in NZ, I thought they exported both. Oh well, the green is much better. :)

I'm not fond of Carlsberg, not sure if I had Tuborg yet. We have a fairly decent liquor store here in Indiana. Big Red Liquors. About 2 times a year they have beer festivals held in Bloomington Indiana. I try to make both of them, also, I try to make there wine festival once a year.

One nice thing about this place, is that I was hunting for some decent mead. Unfortunately, the only mead that had was pathetic California mead. Anyway, I got to know the manager there, and he was able to order mead from poland and Ireland. One day, I'll be making my own mead, probably next year or so.

My favourite beer is grolsh bar non, just the smell is intoxicating, its brewed longer and has a fuller flavour, but is still clean and crisp"I sound like a beer ad"thats the best way I can describe it.

the fool you and my dad would get on like a house on fire he has a full brewing room, not that he uses it much anymore,I might fire a brew up ;) ,he still has a banana wine that began frermenting the day I was born 25 years ago,we recently threw away around 50 demi johns "I think thats the right name" 1 gallon bottles just to make room,he also has a 10 gallon boiler he poached from cafeteria.

the one time he let me have a go at making beer,me and my brother put an extra small bit of sugar in each bottle at the end to make it fizzy, nothing scientific, some were flat, some exploded,I'd love to have a go using a pressure keg.

    rant over :)

@tattogirl: I recently picked up a 6 pack of Tuborg, haven't tried any yet, but I'll post my tastings a bit later.

@Rikky: 10 gallon boiler? Hmmm, it bit larger than my 7.5 gallon stainless steel version.
Also, it is Grolsch NOT Grolsh. I also like Grolsch, they are the perfect bottles to use when bottling beer, since the cap is always there.

One note, you should not have to add the sugar directly to the bottles, you should boil about 4 oz of sugar with about 2 to 3 cups of water, then after 5 to 10 mins of boiling, you add this to your bottling bucket, then siphon into your bottles. Of course, this is only the amount one would use if they were bottling 5 gallons of beer. :)

That big black base better be a cooler, otherwise, drinking some beers warm is horrible. Others, it doesn't really matter.

Thats what I said grolsh :D ,his boiler is about this big "moves arms in circle",I was eleven when I made the beer so I was more interested in the underground fort we were building at the time,I will heed your tips though if I make another brew, turns out someone has donated some pressure kegs to my dad,I might start brew,if I do I'll post you a bottle ;)

I admire you who make beer but I like drinking it too much. Probably mess everything up and wind up burning the house down! Better stick to buying and drinking => and avoid any manufacturing process.:D
