Begining the clean-up, read the thread, but what about Erunt(?) restore points?

It seems like they should be removed in addition to the Windows created restore points. I use them alot because my hard drive is often so full that windows won't create them.

Should I remove them too? I was going to move them off of the computer before I started the suggested cleaning process prior to a posting.

Also, I have a number of what I think are called DownloadedSoftwareFilesOLD.??? which I think I renamed OLD in order to do a fix months and months ago (which I think worked). Can these files remain or can I remove them? (I don't think the name includes "Downloaded" but maybe that will jog someone's memory)

    Thanks

(I am not at the computer as I write this)

Win32/Virut. After cleaning, can you tell if .exe files are infected?

That is, after an AV program seems to have cleaned it and the computer runs fine.

Can you tell which .exe files may be dirty?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

DO NOT remove restore points until all malware has been cleaned up. Having even an infected fall back point when something goes wrong is better than no fall back. That is why it is at the end of our cleaning procedures not at the beginning.

As far as old files, we don't know what you are referring too. You will have to decide if you need the files or not. Delete/uninstall anything you don't need or don't use.

I merged this second thread back to your first thread after I had already answered the first message. You need to stay in one thread.

Note: If you truly have a Virut infection you are probably looking at a total reinstall since it can render your be unreliable and untrustworthy even after trying to perform a cleanup because you cannot be sure that all infected files were found and only full scans by good antivirus programs will detect these to begin with. Backups are also questionable. Virut can infect any file that is considered an executable.
