Being Proactive

Just got a new computer, 5 days old. Windows 7, fully updated, Mcafee Security Center, use CCleaner, Malwarebytes (free version), and SuperAntiSpyware (free version) as proactive measures to keep stuff off.

I would like to take this a step further and scan my new computer with HJT and see if someone might be able to take a look at it to make sure I am not starting out with anything bad from the get-go. This not only gives me a log of what my computer looked like after downloading and installing all my software but also would let me know if there is anything loaded on it that may spell trouble in the future.

In addition, what prompted me to ask is I had a response email through one of my websites titled from "annonymous" (this legitametly happens sometimes if people do not put a name in). I oppened the email and it did not really say much. Seemed like spam. In the email it had an "unsubscribe" link near the bottom on the left side. I clicked on it to "unsubscribe" and since I have my IE popup blocker on high it blocked the window coming up. I thought better of this and just deleted the email and did not accept the popup. However, I don't normally see that unsubscribe link in emails like this so I thought it best to just check this out here.

I have not noticed anything different on my computer, just trying to be proactive so as to not have to frequent help from MG often.

So would someone be willing to take a look at an HJT log. That is if I can run HJT log on Windows 7. By the way where do you get the latest version these days.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We cannot fully analyse your PC with just having you run HJT, if you want me to fully check for malware then you will have to follow the below procedures.

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

    Kestrel13,

Thanks for such a quick reply. Since I am not having any trouble with my computer, at this point, I think I will hold off then. It is a good couple of hours to download all the software suggested and prepare the computer for evaluation. I was just looking for someone to take a quick peak at the HJT log and see if their was reason to run all that is required. Just trying to be proactive and get a solid starting point from which to work in case I have trouble in the future I would have a good baseline to refer to.

    Thanks,

    Kirk

One last question, where on MG do I find the latest version for HJT download for Windows 7? I may just run it for the baseline I was referring to and need the download link and the instructions so as to do this right.
