Windows XP, Home edition 2003, SP3, 32 bit

My wife informed me on 2/12/10 that she was being redirected to ad/info sites when she would click on a link in IE8. She would push the back button and then would be able to connect to the correct site. I ran BitDefender (full scan, no errors) and CCleaner. The problem still continued. I noticed that my Anti Virus had not been able to update in 2 days. I tried to manually update and it failed. I tried to download adaware and spybot, but both were blocked. I ran Microsoft Malicious tool and it found the following file to be suspect C:\Windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\00007951.tmp. I scanned it with BitDefender but no luck. This file was installed on 2/8/10, and the description says it is the main executable for Tiberian Sun. Yet the file is .tmp, not .exe. I have never heard of this game and have not found any other reference to it on my computer. I moved the file to my desktop so I could find it easily.

I followed the read and run instructions and have attached the files. The only program I could not get to download was the Malware Bytes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

    Are you still having problems?

    Thank you Chaslang.

I am now able to click on a link and not be redirected.
However, my Antivirus still will not update. What would you suggest that I do next?

Here is the logtxt file from TDSSKiller.

    Thanks again.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{D805B718-696D-4BD9-ACBD-801E9F39A997}: NameServer = 93.188.163.32,93.188.166.77
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.163.32,93.188.166.77
    O23 - Service: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup (0145231243231630) (0145231243231630mcinstcleanup) - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\COMPAQ~1.YOU\LOCALS~1\Temp\014523~1.EXE (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now delete the below two folders.
    C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner.YOUR-27E1513D96\Application Data\Dealio
    C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner.YOUR-27E1513D96\Application Data\FreeAudioPack

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I was unable to find the following entries when I ran mgtools

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.163.32,93.188.166.77

Everything seems to be running smoothly. No more redirects and
Bit Defender was able to update for the first time in over a week.:)

    I have attached the mglogs.zip

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
