OK, so my wife parents got DSL from Bellsouth. For what ever reason they didn't tell them they wanted to network 2 pc, wirelessly. So they got there modem and I suppose it was working, then went to SAM'S Club and bought a wireless router. Well it wasn't working. So they had someone, not bellsouth come to fix them up. They couldn't get it to connect to the internet with the router installed. SO they took the router out and they could get online but was slow like dial up. I am somewhat PC savy but have rarely messed with ip configurations. I suspect that is the conflict. So I was wondering if anyone knew default ip's that could be used. Or just tell me what to do. Thanks

Does Bellsouth require you to put filters on the phone line?
Could they access the router thru either computer?
Have you talked to Bellsouth about the slow speed issue?

    Filters-
I don't believe so about the filters.

    Router access-
Yes. The other person was able to access the router 198.162.1.1?? Sound right. But it brought up a menu for the router so I would saw yes. I've only talked to them a little about this and have yet to stop by to look at it except when that other person looked at it. It was working I think fine with one pc. They bought the wireless router plugged it in, series I think it is, and then you couldn't connect to the internet at all. The lights on the modem, the guy said, were correct and light up showing everything was fine and didn't understand why it wouldn't get on the net because it should feed through the router uniterupted essentially. Now, mom-in-law mentioned something about BellSouth saying if they wanted more than one pc connected they would have to send them another modem and charge them more. Hence, they got the wireless router and creater trouble for me, the only family half-*** computer literate one. Well except my wife has a Bachelor degree in computer science but hates working on computers. Yeah, I know. SHe's a stay at home mom now. ANyway, they have no business with DSL much less wireless equipment. So I don't know what they have told Bellsouth, they don't understand what Bellsouth has told them, and I am left to see if I can make this work. Someone mentioned to me that the modem ip might be 192.168.1.255 and to go in and click an "enhanced" feature? But like I said I have dialup because of where I live so my DSL and IP skills are very basic because I have never had to do much with it.

    Slow speed issue-
I don't think so. I like I said they shouldn't even have this to begin with. They think the solution is to cancell the BellSouth service and just get another provider. They don't know what questions to ask and I don't know what all they have done. So I was hoping to start from scratch.

I have put some adware and virus scranning software on my thumbdrive to take over there when I go becuase I suspect they are probably eat up with crap and it need to be cleaned. On the desktop it has like five folder named "Morizilla updates.." and a bunch of other junk. I am sure with no virus protection, no windows updates, and who know what else.

While I mentioned that, I clean my own PC often. Going into an unknown PC to clean it, what would you do. I have AVG, Adware SE, Windows Defender, SpyBot S&D, SPywareBlaster, and Service Pack 2 I plan to run. What else might I do. Thanks for the help.

I was reading on the bellsouth page about installing and it said yes there has to be a filter on all phone jacks using DSL.

They should have supplied the filters along with the modem ...if you do have them, put them on and report back.

I took the time to go by there this weekend. They had the filters installed. I removed some junk from their pc, installed AdAware Se, SpyBpt S&D, uninstalled outofdate Norton 2004, installed AVG, Windows SP2, SpyBlaster, and Windows Defender. Turn off some of their system functions, boot up was long time. I left it update windows, it need 71 high priority updates. They have DSL Lite. I went on line to check speed and got 209/109, so I called it good. This all started when they tried installed a wireless router. I had to go into the modem and enable "bridge" and then into the router and select "PPPoe." They were going. Inserted the USB wireless card into the second PC adn they were surfing wireless. SO I think they are happy now. Thanks for the help.
