I used to always run diskkeeper 7 disk defragmenter. Then, one day, i ran PCMARK on my fresh defragged maching. Then, I used Nortan Speeddisk, and ran the utility again. I say about a 33% improvement in the score. In diskkeeper, it reports numerous files as being fragmented, but if it fixes the problem, I get a worse PC mark score for the hard drives.

So, what do you believe is the best degragmenter out there?

BTW, this is on windows XP Pro.

Hi, As I understand it all defrag programs have there own way of allocating space and it is best to stick to just the one.

I have kept with Diskkeeper for a while now although I did use Norton's speed disk.

It seems to do a nice quick job for me.

I don't test for speed etc. any more. I am happy with my computer as it is and find that testing only makes me more confused and disgruntled. Peace Mal

I've been using Diskeeper Lite for quite a while now. It does an adequate job, it is free, and it is very fast if used once a week or so.

I did like Speed disk, but that was the ONLY thing about Norton's that I liked. It seems like after Windows 98, Norton's Utilities caused more problems for me then it solved.

The best free defragmentor is Diskeeper Lite. If your willing to pay $50 then go for O&O defragmentor. I use it on a Windows 2000 machine and it is sweet! It can arrange your files in three different ways (name, last time files are modified, or how often files are accessed) It can also do multiple hard drive simultaneously and incorporates a boot time defragmentor to defrag those pesky Windows files and your Master File Table.

I forgot about the juicy features. Just like diskeeper, it can tell you what files are fragmented and how many fragments. It will also list all the locked files on each partition along with summarizing how much of the CPU was being used by the defragementor (O&O is really designed as a background defragger that uses minimal resources)

Sometimes you need to defragment a drive more than once, even with good defragmentors. If there isn't much contiguous amounts of space to move the files around with then it can be hell for a defragger to properly defrag.

That's where O&O excels. O&O has another defrag routine called space. Its sole purpose is to create a contiguous amount of free space on your partition. Then use the complete method and it should clean a lot of the fragmented files diskeeper would miss.

There is nothing wrong with the Disk Defragmenter that is included in windows. It works very well. Having said that, other programs do give you the option of arranging files in different ways. I use Ontrack System Suite 4 and I use their Jet Defrag. Using Inteli-Cluster technology (which keeps track of the files that you access the most often) it defrags the hard drive and places the most accessed files toward the front (?) of the disk so they are accessed the quickest. Not only does it work, but it works well. My IE, Outlook Express, chat programs, and other things open with amazing speed as compared to before. Granted this will not speed up your entire system and my interpretation of how fast they open before/after may be different than yours but it works very well in my eyes and is a real world improvement. It isn't free though.

If I may intrude, Mal said that Diskeeper make the Defrag in XP well beware, I deleted my Diskeeper 7 for Fat files and it has taken a bit of the XP defrag with it and I now have NO defrag at all.

I noticed that as well....I went to check how much diskkeeper has fixed (pcpitstop) and it said it was poor after I defragmented...I wanted to try my xp one but I found diskeeper just gobbled it up and took its place.

im guessing that when you uninstal diskeeper it removes the MMC plugin that it runs, but unfortunatley when you install it it replaces the default defragger, which would mean that if you did that you would end up with no defragger. i belive that that windows file protection restore thing should replace it again, perhaps. otherwise i guess you would either have to uninstall it then re install it using windows setup (thats in the Add/Remove control panel, just uncheck then check it again), or even reinstall windows :S repair. This isnt sounding good. I will look up the windows file protection thing. BTW beware if you have XP home it might ask you for the pro disk as well for some reason.......:S

Oh and btw for large files that are troublesome for example CD Images you can download a command line tool called contig to make them contiguous from www.sysinternals.com just place it in the directory of the file and type
    contig file.ext
where file is the filename and ext is the extension. Alternativley you can get it to defragment all files in a directory by putting it in a directory and typing:
    contig *.*

type this at command line for the file restoration:

    sfc /scannow

or you could run windows setup repair.

HI, One way of getting the defrag back would be to re install Diskkeeper lite.

I don't know which is best but I often see people having trouble with defrag programs stopping because of disk activity where as Diskkeeper has the ability to defrag in the background. Peace Mal
