Any suggestions besides ZoneAlarm, apparently their leak test results weren't great.

Revamped a laptop for my neighbor and trying to find a good, reliable firewall to install...an idiot proof one. lol

I have used zonealarm for years now and it has never let me down yet. But yes there is others you can download and try

I can highly recommend Comodo Internet Security suite. It has the option just to install the firewall, or it will install an antivirus product as well.

I have used Comodo for some time now and have had no issues.

Comodo tends to overwhelm the average user and has been known to p*** off even some experienced users.

I use Comodo. I would not recommend it for a beginner.

    Another vote for PCTools.

Actually, if you have a router between your computer and Internet, Windows Firewall is more than enough. Also, change your DNS settings to OpenDNS.

I have been spyware and virus free with this setup:

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!).

    Hope that helps!

Not recommended to depend on the windows FW alone.

    refer to section 3: Firewalls

Most users wouldn't even be able to find their DNS settings. :)

An elbow is what you get poked with if you don't have a firewall installed. :-D

I am sure it is a well detailed set of instructions......one could no doubt go thru with all those procedures......................................or they could just install a firewall and be done with it. Which is what the OP started this thread about.

and the title of the thread was firewall for beginners, so I'm guessing they're gonna wanna bypass going thru all that ;)

Sorry, my router works with Windows Firewall just fine. If it don't work for you, stop downloading porn, disconnect from the internet and go into a cave somewhere. That guide (yes, our own guide) fails in that one sentence and you can't prove us wrong. Routers come with directions poster sized that ANY idiot can follow. PapaDuke wins, you all fail.

I'm unsubscribing. I linked to information from the how to protect yourself from malware thread, written by our resident expert and recommended a good FW for a beginner IMO. Job done. :)

Agreed, it is a decent guide. You can tell an engineer wrote it ;) No disrespect meant to anyone, but I disagree with

Sure, it won't hurt anything so its acceptable. Does not make software the best solution was my point :)

Must admit as I said to PapDuke via PM I do use the windows firewall on my vista machine. But I surf safely, and rarely leave here or IM :)

:innocent I wouldn't do any such thing :-D

Only reason I use a software FW along with my router is to block something that manages to get in and wants to phone home. As I do online banking and shopping, this gives me some peace of mind, even if it's not needed. I don't have the expertise to determine that threat assessment on my own.

Not hurting anything. Again, the thread was titled "best firewall" and I was shocked how far the thread progressed before someone gave what is really the best answer, a hardware firewall. From there, you can discuss the best software firewall to use in addition, but it does not change the root answer. :)

I think the question was answered with the votes for PCFirewall--> without the add-ons as outlined in the How to Protect yourself from malware!

And we are all in agreement that having a firewalled router can be adequate protection.

But does Bocaj want to go thru doing this for the friend? Or just install a firewall and give the computer back?

( But now you are going to make me have to get into my router and actually set the security up on it.....:( ...no wait....I live in the boonies and there is no one within a mile of me...hehe).

I guess I see it this way....

50 bucks plus for a good firewall.
50-80 bucks for a good router.

Setup router with basic password protection and WEP, turn on Windows firewall and have protection that lasts for years and years without expiring. Of course, a free firewall eliminates cost, but I can't put a price on good security and if I could it would be a lot more then 80 bucks :)

Were all good my friends :)

This A.M. while trying to install Comodo, I was prompted that it was a BETA version and known to probably have bugs.

I thought fromt he guide here that it was the most recommended, but I could not in good conscience proceed.
I went with PC Tool, I hope this works o.k.

You should be able to download the non-bet aversion from here: http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html
