Best free password manager?

OK, with all the hacking and stuff going on lately I'm thinking about trying a password manager. Especially seeing those visionaries :mad like lulzsec are posting any details on the sites they hack it seems double negligent not to have different passwords for each site, etc.

Don't yell at me but - some of my passwords are the same for different things and some only vary slightly (smart - no but really, I'd have to remember dozens otherwise).

I did a quick google on password managers and there seem to be quite a few out there.

Keepass seems OK but having had no experience with them and given the sensitive nature of password management I'd dearly love to hear anyone's thoughts on them.

Can't say it's the best but I use lastpass

If I recall it would by default auto fill passwords, which I found disconcerting. I disabled that feature and now I have to enter a master password for it to fill.

    Cheers..

I also use LastPass, which was recommended by a co-worker.

I'm not certain but does lastpass store your passwords on their server? It says access them from everywhere? If that is the case it may be a consideration if you want the only master file to be stored on your personal computer.

Yes its on their servers. One can log in and view/change ones passwords from any where.

Yes, by disabling/removing the browser extension. But one will need to login and access the PW vault each time (with the master password) to view PW's.

    Plenty of info here.

    Cheers..

Every other thing on the internet that you use a password for has your information stored on servers as well. I imagine the risk stays about the same as someone hacking Facebook's servers, as someone hacking LastPass' servers (and decrypting your login info). I could be wrong, though.

Yes, strong master passwords are always a good idea.

Just to clarify for anyone else reading these posts, a strong password is:

At LEAST, if not more than, 8 characters
    Alphanumeric (uses letters and numbers)
Uses both uppercase and lowercase letters
Does NOT contain words that are A) in any dictionary, B) have any personal connotation (such as a family member's name)
Does NOT contain numbers that are personally identifiable (yours or a family member's birthday/social security number/phone number/etc.)
Special characters (!@#$%^&* etc.) are an added bonus

I believe a strong random password you can't remember and have written down somewhere is more secure than an easily remembered password that is easier for others to guess.

One of the absolute worst problems plaguing the web: lack of time-and/or-DATE-Stamping on material.

I have absolutely no clue if this article is from 2007, or 1997...?!?

I have never used one of these before until today. I tried out LastPass and it seems quite great. It is pretty intuitive and integrates well into Firefox. I have not tried it on other browsers though. You can access the utility from the local program or the add on to your browser.
