I have DSL with Qwest at 1.5 mbps and love it. Had some problems in the first month, but that was due to harsh weather conditions causing junction box problems.

i only have two cable hookups in my apartment one in my room and one in my living room so i use a really long cable cord its around 10 or so feet i wonder if that could cause my connection to be slow

cause it always seem a bit slow

1 Mbps is 1024 Kbps, so compare that to 56 Kbps dial-up.

Your ten foot long cable, as long as it's good quality and not damaged, probably isn't adversly affecting anything. There are cable-length limitations, but coax and cat 5 can go a lot further than ten feet before needing a repeater.

T1 is 1.455 Mbps, if you actually use the full T1. You don't have T1. Those are dedicated leased lines, used primarily by businesses and the bandwidth is usually broken up and shared partially by the office phones. The good thing about t1 is that unlike Broadband, it's symmetrical, meaning you've got 1.455 Mbps upstream and downstream. Whereas your cox might be 4 Mbps downstream, but probably more like 1 Mbps or less upstream.

The numbers don't really mean much, because there are many other factors that affect the speed.

I have Verizon DSL and I'm extremely happy with it. Advertised speeds are not as high as with Comcast, their competition on my area, but it is way more reliable. I have NEVER had a blackout with my Verizon DSL. Most Comcast users I know are losing their connection at least once a week.

I've been on Comcast for over 4 years. Originaly the modem used a phone line for upload and cable fo download so uploads were very slow but downloads rocked. As of about 2 1/2 years ago I got a regular cable modem(Motorola SB5100) and I can't recall the last time I was off line. MY connection is 6mbps and downloads are faster here then at mybrothers office where they supposedly have a dual T1.

I pay about the same and like I said I haven't had any problems. I do however run a Linux box as a Router/Firewall with a software called TeamInternet(No Longer Available) and maybe that helps with stability. Comcast has indicated that they should be going to 10mbps, I think this year.

i dont think cox will ever go that high thier highest speed is 5 meg but if i got that it would be an extra 15 dollars a month

i think i have two choices for high speed internet cox or verizon and i have no clue fast thier speed is

    No it's not.

    T1 is 1.544 Mbps.

That's Megabits, not Megabytes. There are 8 bits to a byte.

Their highest speed in your area maybe, but not here.

Standard here is 6Mbps. Premiere, which is what I use, is 9Mbps.

Then there are places with a Premiere tier of 15Mbps.

What's the fastest possible connection for DSL in the States?

Here it's ADSL 2+, which is 24 Mbps.

  12. Adrynalyne

    Adrynalyne Guest

AFAIK, and I've not kept up with it, ADSL2 hasn't been implemented yet although equipment is being upgraded for it.

Although there are some places with Fiber, up to 30Mbps.

Really, I thought you guys were slightly ahead of us.

We have ADSL 2+ ISP's here, so I assumed you guys would too.

Sorry, my mistake. I knew there was a 4 and a 5. I typically answer things like that off the top of my head, using my own knowledge. I don't just google things to give a quick response and seem like I know everything.;)

splitt3r You are now the victim of a drive by title change

I have had comcast for about 3 years and am loving it. download speeds are incredible and upload speeds suck imho, but they are beter than dsl. we get outages about 3 times a year. abnout 6 months ago the RCA modem we had died so ic alled tech support, they came the next day and replaced it with a motorola surfboard. it works so much better now, the RCA modem would just die occasionally and I had to power cycle it which took 1 min as opposed to 10 secconds with the new one. the only times I have problems is when I am uploading with bittorent because of the crap upload speeds.

I have Telus Adsl standard which is 1.5Mbps and I get really good ping with that and decent speed(160KB/s, not 160Kb/s). I am waiting for them to come out with ADSL2 which is going to be faster. The ISPs around me are slow. Shaw is doing fine with 7Mbps as their fastest but I probably don't plan to goto shaw anytime soon. I don't want to lose my good ping.

ADSL +2 is a reworking of ADSL to make it faster, and lengthen the distance you can be from the exchange.

At least you could upload quickly. :)

That's only downstream and it is the maximum rate but as you stated it is very dependent upon loop length and quality.

The upstream maximum is 1 Mbps.

Also not mentioned is that fact that the DSL standard has a chunk of overhead in there. So while you may be able to train the modems at 24 Mbps (and that really is 24,000,000 bits per second) your actual payload throughput will be much lower and is also dependent upon the packet sizes the applications use. The larger the packet size the lower the overhead for the IP protocol. There is also ATM overhead of 5 bytes for every ATM cell (an ATM cell has 53 total bytes. 5 of them are overhead.) You come into your ADSL2+ modem as IP but the other side towards your ISP is ATM based.

For example, right now in my lab at work, I have an ADSL2+ modem trained at 1 Mbps upstream and 24 Mbps downstream. In the downstream direction I am sent 1500 byte test packets at a rate that is approximately 27 Mbps for line bit rate (that is 26.61 Mbps for datagram bit rate). The actually payload (or datagram rate that can be received at the ADSL2+ modem output is 21.47 Mbps.

Oh yeah! Let's make him feel bad.

At home my upstream rate hits as high as 1.2 Mbs and downstream has been as high as 10.5 Mbps. Typical downstream is 7 to 8 Mbps.

We could eat dinner while waiting for Halo to upload! :p

LOL, bad luck Halo, even your upstream sucks.

If it makes anyone feel better, I'm only on 512/256 with a 1 GB download limit.

And get this, then it gets "shaped" to 28.8 Kbps if I go over, which is every month. :)

    Hi speed broadband is a rip-off. I won't pay more than $30 a month.

high speed broadband is that what cox is

  32. chaslang

I believe Cox is a cable provider. If so, it is much faster than what you will get from DSL unless you are able to get ADSL2+ at a rate higher that what you get now from Cox. But you would have to check the price. It could be significant.

    See: http://www.cox.com/highspeedinternet/

But I thought you already had them as an ISP.

    Well,

    1. Because I pay for it.
    2. Because Cox offers it in my market.

Cox is not an equal oppurtunity company. They screw people whenever possible. You are either in a market they don't care about, or there is no faster competition in your area. In my case, Cox upped their speeds to beat Qwest, who was offerring 7Mbps DSL. Even the slowest tier here is 6Mbps, which is 2 more than you.

their offering 5 meg for 15 dollars more and im thinking of getting it but is it really worth it how much more speed could an extra meg get me

i think we only have verizon here for them to compete with but i dont know how fast verizon is in my area

I could get ADSL 2+ at 24Mbps for much less than that, and cable for even less again.

  46. Adrynalyne

    I pay 55/mo. for 9Mbps.

    Of course, for 6, I'd pay 40.

Cox are bastards. They don't believe in serving everyone equally.

The price quoted by Moumantai was including TV service, Im sure.

yeah but i used to only have 1 m they upgraded everyone to 4 m about 4 or 5 months ago probubly because verizon uped thier speed but thats just a guess

Insomniac. I hate to burst your bubble but you have no right to brag unless you actually have ADSL 2+ for that price. Stop bragging and actually get that price.
