The transistor, as in the replacement for radio valves. Without the transistor you wouldn't have any of the current electrical stuff. I well remember my first transistorised radio. Slightly smaller in height and width than my current laptop and about twice as thick. Bazza

telecommunication satellites-now we can watch 24 hours a day coverage of an event that takes 15 minutes to explain completely.
internet-now closet perverts don't have to worry about their minister seeing them leave the back room in the video store (the one with the "you must be 18 to enter" sign) with movies in hand.

Agree with bigbazza. The invention of the semiconductor. I remember when car radios went from tubes to transistors. It was 1964.

About the same time that cars went from DC generators to alternators too, thanks to solid-state diodes. HUGE improvement in amperage, particularly amperage at low RPM.

Almost everything here goes back to the transistor. Up there with the wheel and the steam engine, I guess, as one of the great leaps forward.

For the 21st century, I think stem cells will be number one.

Sir Walter Babbage designed the first computer, the Difference Engine, in 1822. His next design, the Analytical Engine, would have been the first programmable computer with memory, if anyone would actually have believed it could be built with 19th century technology. Ironically, the London Science built a working model of the computer and its printer using 19th century technology. A mathematician friend of Babbage's, Lady Ada Lovelace, even wrote some programs for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Difference_engine

Imagine where we would be now if computers were a 150 year old technology.
