Hey gang, daughter is graduating and (hopefully) going of to college in the fall. Would like to get her a laptop, but really have no experience or knowledge of what to get. Very familiar with desktops (build/repair/etc. for a few years), but totally unfamiliar with the laptops. Should also state that I'm pushing the years and can't find a job where I live (most probably due to my age) and would like to keep it as affordable as possible ....have looked at tiger direct/ best buy/ some of the local stores .... but other than standard features (ram, processor, wifi, etc) what should I be looking for or comparing? Do I need to be concerned about her age and look for a "rugged" type or does that really make a lot of difference .... advice for an old fart, please.

You should contact the school she is attending for advice. For example, a graphic arts major will have different hardware and software requirements than an English Lit major. They may even have a special program that may allow her to get a computer and the software she will need at a substantial discount.

Thanks .... didn't even dawn on me that that might be an option .... now just have to get her to make a choice as to where she will go .....pressure is on and she's a little scared about it all.

OK, now that we're back, my daughter has decided to go to a state school that doesn't offer any laptop support ...no rental/no give aways/not much in the way of scholarships either!!! So, any suggestions for a laptop ...not an art major...maybe psych (but with kids, who knows.... I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up!!).

Just Playing is still right though. Any University will have student support even if the colleges haven't

If it is not too personal, have you a budget $$$ range in mind?
Refurbished P2's and P3's are cheap and they will do most things, up to brand new duo-cores with 17"screens, full 101 keyboards, 1 gig of RAM, 100 gig hard drives, etc. Bazza
