I thought there had to be a thread on this already, but I couldn't find it.

Per the anti-malware recommendations of this forum I have switched to Firefox as my browser on my WinXP SP3 and my Vista Business machines.

My immediate, obvious observation was that Windows Update does not like to be accessed by means of FF (gee, I wonder why :confused ).

My preliminary fix is to keep IE7 installed, and designated as my default browser, so that I get critical updates pushed to me (when all the stars are in alignment...), but to use FF for my browsing needs.

Is there a more elegant solution than this? rolleyes

That seems to be one of the only solutions that I have come up with. Depending on how you have your Updates configured. I think you could technically remove IE7 (not completely but you can remove its visibility on the computer itself) if you have Automatic Updates on, and continue to use FF as your default browser.

Me personally I have the same setup as you do. I keep IE7 on just for when I manually check for updates and I use FireFox as my primary browser.

An additional option is to get a Firefox add-on. The name of the extension is IE Tab and you can get it here. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419 You can do a manual update whenever you want by just clicking on the IE Tab that will show up on the toolbar after download and follow the instructions on the download page. You may want to try it.
