Hey guys. First off if my inquiry is not within the rules of posting please (mods) delete this without response.

I have one computer in the basement using verizon DSL. I want to set up another desktop in the 1st floor.
What do you guys think I need to go about this?

    Thanks.

It depends on the distance between the source of the internet connection in the basement, and the location of the 1st floor PC. If the 'straight line' distance is relatively short with few obstacles, then a wireless router should be OK. If any walls and the floor between the 2 locales have brick, lots of metal pipe and/or wires, then the signal from a wireless router will be affected. On the other hand, if the distance can be easily covered by drilling a hole in the floor, then a wired course of action is recommended. As to brand names.... as far as I'm concerned, any of the name brands is as good as the next: Netgear, Belkin, DLink, Linksys, are good, and some of the lesser known brands like TrendNet, CNet, Zonet, etc, are OK too..... but that's my opinion. I'm not real loyal to any brands in network hardware; I've used many, MANY different brands, and (for the most part) they all work as advertised....

Do you want to string wires or do you prefer a wireless setup?

Also what brand and model of dsl modem/router has Verizon supplied to you? You might not have to purchase anything.

Hey plodr and dlb, thanks for the responses.

I have a verizon westell versalink model 327w.
I noticed that it does have 4 ethernet ports in the back.

Do you think I could run 2 ethenet wires and run 2 comps of the same modem?

If I Googled right, you can hook up 4 wired computers to your DSL router/switch.

"3. Connect the yellow Ethernet cable from any one of the Ethernet jacks
    marked
on the rear panel of VersaLink to the Ethernet port on your
computer. Repeat this step to connect up to three additional PCs to
    VersaLink.
NOTE: You may connect to any of the four Ethernet jacks on the rear panel of VersaLink as
they serve as an Ethernet switch."

I had to use the HTML version, but it also mentions you may have wirless as well... :-D

Fred_G, thanks so much for helping me out.
Pretty crazy that my modem might have wireless.

I will be on the search tomorrow to find a very long ethernet cord.

I appreciate all the help guys, thanks so much for the time and effort Fred_G.

Hope I got the correct info for ya'! On page 11 it mentions how to setup the wireless.

Yup. Fred was right! The modem (which is also a router) has built-in wireless. So you can plug in up to 4 PCs using the wired ports in the modem/router, and connect any number of PCs via the wifi. However, keep in mind what I posted above about wireless connections...
Good luck, and let us know how it goes! I found the manual for the westell versalink model 327w at this link. It opens directly to a .PDF Adobe Reader document which you can save for reference later if needed. This is the PDF/Adobe version of the guide Fred_G linked to above.
