What is the right procedure to get the best results from virus/ spyware/ rootkit scans? MA recommends showing hidden files. Should the rig always be put in Safe Mode? Anything else? Thanks.

Each scan is different, some are used in normal mode and some are used in safe mode. It all depends on what you're scanning/removing.

The majority of our scans are done in normal mode. The main reason is because running scans in Safe Mode will not show everything because Safe Mode means the bare min. things running which when infections are present they will not show in Safe Mode like they will in normal mode.

Showing hidden files has nothing to do with the scanners or their ability to find problems. It only has to do with your ability to find the files if you need to look for them to delete them.

Not true as written. It is for manual removal steps that you need to do this. Properly written scanners will see the files no matter what your system settings are.
