 just a quick question. i've heard AOL is evil and spiteful leaving all sorts of crap behind if you try to uninstall it. that is exactly what i want to do since i hooked up to hi speed and,i promise, i am never, never, never going back to dial-up. once you gain knowledge it's impossible to be ignorant.anyway, any body got a surefire method to eliminate this stuff? holla at me.

the short answer is no you will never totaly remove AOL from you'r system. some of the experts here who know a lot more about this stuff than most of us will tell you they still have parts of it left years after removing it from their systems. running C CLEANER will remove some of the leftovers but not all of it.

Yep. AOL is a beach. You might also try running the registry cleaner in CCleaner's 'Tools' section to remove AOL entries from your registry. Just make sure to create a backup when it prompts you so that you can restore the registry in case something goes wrong. You can also search your hard drive for *aol* and delete those files, but that doesn't account for the files WITHOUT aol in the file name.

At this point i have run both of those things, rebooted and stiil have 120 files and folders in a search. no wonder my old geek buddy used to rail against AOL whenever we discussed home computers. too many conflicts and too much leftover crap. i hate to have to pick this apart bit by bit but if that's what it takes, i will. i will dammit...dammit...dammit....

OMG! ROFLMAO This thread is great. :)

You definitely will have to manually delete allllllll of the left over folders, and CCleaner will do great. But in situations like this I would also use RegSeeker. Now RegSeeker is not safe to use like CCleaner. But you can run it, and look for all of the things that reference AOL then ditch it. But absolutely DO NOT let RegSeeker clean all that it finds. It takes a lot of stuff that it shouldn't. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2579 Oh! While you're at it, it can tweak a few things for you too which is nice.

    Good luck! Keep trudging. lmao

i've got reg seeker but i mainly use it to clear out histories .i'm not real versed on registries and how to read them so i kinda stay away from messin' around in them.unless i have to. i 'll give it a try after i get some other stuff fixed.check my other threads . i'm in pc hell right now.

Ah. Well in that case I suggest that you ditch RegSeeker, and just use CCleaner. CCleaner will clean your history, and a lot more, plus it's really safe.

RegSeeker can really mess things up if you let it remove things that shouldn't be removed. My exclude list is forever long. ;)
