I thought i saw somewhere on this site that Online armor was recommended for a firewall but i talked to a friend of mine and he said he thought Comodo's was better. Is one significantly better than the other, or is there not alot of truth in my buddies word?

    Thanks

It's pretty much a matter of personal opinion. I myself use Comodo Internet Security now. Before that I used the older Comodo Personal Firewall v2.4. I have grown familiar with it through the years. It is a very solid performer.
Just try different ones and find one YOU are comfortable with.

Yep, personal opinion and combined with this link: http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php to weed out the bad ones and see which ones performed best.

Personally, I like Online Armor Free after having tried NIS, free Zonealarm and Comodo. Made sure that my computer was squeaky clean and installed Online Armor as "trusted" for all programs. Hardly any pop-ups, unlike Comodo which pop-ups drove me nuts. Just too complicated for me.

I use Comodo, but I have to agree with Oma...the pop-ups asking for permission drive me nuts too. I've seen links on how to configure it, but I haven't had the motivation yet to try them. It is well rated, but I'd probably go with something else.

Used Comodo firewall on systems that needed a freware alternative to the Windows firewall after Sygate was eaten by Norton:yum. I also prefer stand alone apps to the all in one, although both have their advantages and disadvantages. Am using OnLine Armor free now with avast AV. as avast it runs on multiple operating systems and has never given me a reson to change. Try them both and give each at least a few days, then decide. There are also many sites available to test your firewall, as you may already be aware. ShieldsUp is a popular one.

Are you saying that people who use Comodo firewall are irregular? I use it and have for quite a few years and I'm not an Admin or IT type.
If you Google as you suggested, you will see that Comodo always scores one of the highest scores in testing. Consistently.
And using McAfee? I'd rather be irregular.

I have a further question on firewalls. I notice in MG "top picks" for freeware, no firewall got a really geekolicious score. I think Outpost Firewall was best at 4.14. I didn't see the Online Armor firewall in the top choices.

My NIS 2009 subscription is running out soon, and I am changing back to freeware (I used Comodo before this year, but their geeko' score is Bad). Of Outpost Firewall and Online Armor Personal, which is the the better?

    Thnaks.

    Hi there DukOfURL

Ideally you should start your own thread rather than tagging onto this one.

I personally use PCTools Firewall on my XP machines and the Windows Firewall on my Vista. I would like to comment that Outpost is what i'd dub a "little difficult" I wouldn't say it's a FW aimed at the normal-avergae PC user. I don't have any experience with Online Armour...

Thanks, Kestrel. I should have started a new thread but this one was close to what I wanted, so I took the easy way out. I'll be more circumspect in the future. I think I will try out Online Armor. I can always change later.

All of you, what's the best firewall for Windows XP, in your opinion?

As I stated in post 2 of this thread, it's a matter of taste. What one person likes, another doesn't. Try one for a while, then remove it and try another until you find one that YOU like.

I've used pretty much all of them over the years and to be honest, Windows firewall is more than enough with a hardwire router between your computer and the modem.

Some other, off-topic security freeware suggestions/personal preferences:

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!).

    Hope that helps!

I see what the last 2 messengers mean about firewalls. To get straight to the point, I'll ask those, who didn't just simply name their favorite firewall in this thread: The reason why I wrote, "what's the best firewall, in your opinion..." is because I want to know which firewall works best for you (in YOUR opinion), not anyone other than yall.

As you can see in my previous reply, I did state my personal preference for Outline Armor and the reason why over any other FW I tried. Otherwise I wouldn't have had so many in the past.

NIS (not free) was bloatware then, Zonealarm, too many failures/annoynances, Comodo too many pop-ups for permission. Of course the Matousec rating is always important since it rates the Firewalls.
