Hi everyone... sorry if you've already read this in the software forum, I'm not sure anymore whether it's a software or a hardware problem.

Here's the update on what's been going on:

I'd been having issues with "wuauclt" errors, so after some googling I renamed the file "wuauclt.old" and deleted other files. After this I began to run into problems. I had updated all of my virus protection programs and was about to run them in safe mode but I seem to be unable to start in safe mode (I get a long list of drivers and it just stops). I am also unable to run msconfig (it says that "MFC42u.DLL was not found" I have since downloaded that dll and extracted it, but I am still getting the error message.

When running chkdks, I get the following message in the verifying indexes:
    "Deleting entry...mfc71u.dll, mfcsubs.dll, mgmtapil.dll, miglibnt.dll, miglibnt.dll, migpwd.dll, mimefilt.dll, mlang.dat, m11_hp.dll, m11_mtf.dll, m11_pic.dll, mmdrv.dll, deleting entry sunprotectionserver.exe-2133CA02..." and several others. When running a second time, I get the same message.

When I run SpybotSD, I get several error messages:
"The file or directory C\WINDOWS\system32\migpwd.exe is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." "...\mlang.dat..." "...\migpwd.exe..."

I downloaded and ran Dial-a-Fix, and the detailed log is attached.

Now it seems I can't even run music in iTunes, and I'm getting an error message about my audio/video configurations.

I have tried system restore, but it does not seem to finish. I can select the date, and click next, but nothing happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions... I'm in way over my head :(

Wow and system restore wouldn't work? I would say maybe get a new hard drive and just complete reinstall windows. Try backing up your files somehow first.

im guessing that you may have deleted some system files that you actually needed. messing with that kinda stuff can be dangerous...maybe a repair install can fix it.

hmm maybe try running the XP disk to repair your installation, but when I have this type of problem I just use do a fresh install as above. If as apears you cant boot XP up and you want data back try EASEUS works for me.

Sorry seen this has already been suggested, go with that.

If you can still get into Windows, even with problems, click Start, then run, then sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc)

Insert your xp disc into the cd/dvd drive, and keep clicking retry, and windows will repair its' protected files.

    Thanks!

The problem is, my XP disk is not with me right now. If I can't get the registry problems fixed I'll have to use the disk next week.

I do think it's getting better... chkdsk said today that the volume was clean, and only repaired one file. I can also now get msconfig to run again.

I also ran the protected files scan (sfc) with no problems.

    I'll keep trying!

If sfc /scannow was o.k. you are almost there.
If you can get into Windows ,ok , now, it is as well to set a restore point, then shut down, and try to restore to an earlier time.

I'm still getting some registry errors come up when I run registry scans, but at least now dial-a-fix is coming up clean.

I'm now able to use safe mode, and have ran scans while in safe mode.

I'm updating my itunes to see if that fixes the audio/video configuration error.

I still can't seem to use system restore. I can pick an earlier date, click next, then I get the "are you sure" page. I click next again - get the hour glass - but then nothing happens. The computer doesn't restart... I'm not sure what the problem is with my system restore yet.

Are you trying from within windows, or, at start up?
If you are having problems within with system restore, then you might well have lost other restore dates.
