BIG CDRW Issues...

Hey im having a big problem with my CD drive...

When i go into my computer the icon for the cd drive does not show up but then when i try to open the cd drive it opens as normal and the LEDs flash

Ive checked all the cables inside and they are all fine and all connected but it still seems o not respond?

What do you think is wrong? is it screwed or is there something i can do?

 

btw its an ASUS CDRW 52x24x52x and im running XP pro...

there are 3 possibilities that i can think of up front. either A: the cdrom drive died (even though it powers up) or B: windows is too stupid to know it's there or C: the bios didn't detect it since it wasn't even looking for it. an easy way to find out is by looking in the bios. when you turn on your computer, there should be a screen that tells you to press a certain key to go into setup. press that key (usually delete). go find the place where it asks you to detect the hard drive. see if it'll sense the presence of a cdrom drive. if it does, then it's all windows fault. if it doesn't, then it's a possibility that the cdrom drive is dead. or another option is a simple one: try it on another computer.

Also, double check the IDE cable. Chances are it's correct since most cables now only go on one way, but if you have it flipped around it would probably do something like this.

Also, I'd agree with Strogg, first off check the BIOS and see if it is recognized there.

 

Where is it in the BIOS?
