Big Latency Problem - 2mb BB Aswell FFS!

I play counterstrike: source and I run it on 2mb broadband. Every time I go into a server even if the server's latency is below 50 it ends up with my latency being around 150. I wouldn't be that bothered if I was running 512k Internet but I'm annoyed because even people running 1mb and 512k still have better latency than me (around 30 - 50).

I doubt that this problem is to do with the programs running in the background as I hardly have any as you can see below:

    taskmgr.exe
    alg.exe
    ctfmon.exe
    svchost.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    Steam.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    explorer.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    winlogon.exe
    csrss.exe
    smss.exe
    System
    System Idle Process

I just would like to know if there is any way I can sort my latency out as the only reason I signed up for 2mb BB was for online gaming and now I feel I've wasted my money... Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this.

Well, you could definitely kill these processes as they should not be needed (but not sure if they would have any effect on your ping):
    alg.exe
    ctfmon.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    spoolsv.exe

It could be due to your, network hardware/configuration, ISP, the number of people online in your neighborhood connected to the same hub. Even more importantly the distance of the server you connect to and the path your connection takes to get to that server, server's load capacity, etc.
Also make sure your system is not infected with Trojan, Spyware would show on TaskManager but Trojan infection...not necessarily, hence its name.

Cheers Turc... I still need to find a possible way of lowering my latency though.

Well, besides getting a better ISP/service, you could try checking/tweaking your network configuration settings. Sometimes playing around with the related bandwidth settings using a 3rd party program such as CableNut or even a simple tool like DrTCP021 could help quite a bit. Both programs are free, cablenut is more complicated so you might want to try DrTCP021 first which simply brings up the related registry settings in a single GUI window for you to adjust easily. The program and its tutorial can be found on www.broadbandreports.com. You can download cablenut from MG:

    Good Luck.

What kind of broadband is this? Cable? DSL?

The bandwidth of your connection is completely unrelated to the latency. For example. DSL has better latency, but has less bandwidth than cable which has a little higher latency on average. Of course this all depends on the service provider and the server you are communicating with.

Is your latency 150ms at best? Or can you connect to some servers with a better latency?

P.S. - For future reference, only post a topic in one place. Believe it or not, we do have the ability to browse around in multiple parts of this forum...

Ok sorry Wyatt.... I'm using DSL and sometimes I can connect to servers at around 90ms but then after about 5 minutes it shoots up to around 150.

Its probably the routing of your connection.

Have you run through a few bandwidth tests to see what you are really getting?

Is your DSL modem, internal, or external?

    Truthfully, 150ms isnt bad.

Im on a 1.5 connection, and am getting what I pay for, yet my pings however around that sometimes.

another thing every time i open aol or internet explorer i get pop ups even while using counterstrike so now i use mozilla

    Two contradicting arguements I'd say...

I have to agree with Omega on that....

Another thing it could be, especially if you are on DSL, is interleaving.

Look it up. It adds built in latency to your connection.

could be that your host file is compromised too...
