My mouse has stopped working. It began to cut-out in the back USB port so I switched it to the front USBs. It would stop working and I could unplug it and then replug it and it would start back. Today it stopped completely. I bought a new mouse but that did not work. I tried to "add new hardware" but the computer does not sense the mouse at all. I tried to reinstall the mouse driver with the driver CD that came with my computer, however it prompts me to "double click" on the mouse picture that looks like my mouse... well I can't do that and no keyboard key will activate the installation. In the control panel under "mouse" I tried to "troubleshoot" but nothing happens. I have never navigated without my mouse before and am fumbling around. Your help would be GREATLY appreciated. My sanity is at stake.
    Thank You,
    Elizbeth

I got a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer USB (one of the first popular optical mice) back in '99. It started to develop the same problem you are having, and I could fix the problem (for little bit) by unplugging and plugging it back in. I found out the problem was a bad USB cable in the mouse. I disected a Logitech USB mouse I hated and put the USB cable from it in my other mouse. It has worked since then. It sounds like the problem I had, except for other mice worked with it.

I am assuming that the logitech is is the old mouse and the microsoft is the new mouse. So, if your new mouse is a standard Microsoft PS/2 Mouse,it should work on practically any OS without needing to install any driver for it. I wonder what that "PROBLEM CODE 24" means, I googled it and came up with nothing. If your new mouse is actually a PS/2 mouse, then try (if possible) a different USB mouse on your computer. Also try both of the mice on another computer.

It sounds like there is a conflict with the hardware. If you can fumble through to the hardware systems and check that, it might give you an indication of where to go from there.

Do you use ANY Usb devices? If so, unplug them, before you try the following:

    Click start, then RUN

    then type in:

    devmgmt.msc (press enter)

Click the + next to "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"

Click on all the devices within: Then uninstall them. Reboot.

After a reboot, try using your mouse.....

Thanks for the suggestions, but, my mouse is still dead. The new Microsoft mouse I bought came with the a PS2 port adapter. I tried it on the new and old mouse but nothing happened.

I can't disconnect all my USB devices because my keyboard is pluged into it one.

Any other suggestions before I toss this computer out the window?

    Your help is very appreciated,
    Elizabeth

Not sure if an E-Machine has this option in the bios, but sometimes checking the bios for Enable USB mouse could help.

So the only USB device you use that doesn't work is the mouse. Hmmm, have you removed any and all software that came with the mouse? If not, try that and see if the mouse works.

Thanks for your response. I didn't install any software and I'm not sure where to look for any that Gateway may have installed. When I put the "Drivers" CD (that came with my computer) in, it says that I have no mouse driver installed. When I try to install it, it won't let me because I can't "double click" on the picture of my mouse. I can't make any keyboard key select the item.

    Any more suggestions?

    Thank you,
    Elizabeth

Go into the device manager, see what it tells you about your mouse. Try rolling back, updating, or reinstalling the driver from there. You can get to the system properties window by using rhe keyboard shortcut Windows key + pause/ break key. You can then use the tab and arrow keys to get to the device manager.

Hi, Ok I went to System Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, (no mouse listed) USB Controllers. The list had 2 Intel Host Controllers, 1 Unknown Device, 1 USB Printing Support and 2 USB Root Hosts. The Unknown Device details said USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\5&DDD2671D&0&2 there was no driver associated with it. One USB Root Hosts was empty the other said USB printing support.
I figured out how to move my curser with the number pad so I tried to install my mouse driver from the “Drivers” CD again but nothing happened.
    Thank You,
    Elizabeth

That would probably be your mouse, try associating the device with a mouse driver.

    Ok...
I went to the "Unknown Device Properties" and my options were:
Driver Details - no driver files are required or loaded
Update Driver - wizard could not find a driver on my drive or on my CD
Roll back - no previous version
Uninstall - well, it uninstalled but when I rebooted it was back.

This is so frustrating... I really appreciate all you guys help!
    Thanks,
    Elizabeth

    Hi,
I have been going around in circles with the Gateway email support (I think they don't read the previous emails so they just keep telling me to do the same things.) Anyway, one tech told me to boot in safe mode and then to:

"Remove the driver for the USB for mouse support and reboot the system. Restart the system using the PS/2 mouse and disable the mouse remote access that you used with the number pad on your keyboard. Once disabled, reinstall the driver for the USB mouse. "

I emailed back that I couldn't locate any installed mouse drivers and not sure where to look for "the USB for mouse support". Of course a different tech emailed me back, ignored my question and made previously tried suggestions.

You guys are always so much more helpful. Can anyone explain what it is I was supposed to do in safe mode? Do you think that reinstalling Windows would fix this problem? The thought of all the downloads and updates I would have to do frightens me.

    Thanks,
    Elizabeth

I can't stand Gateway. But anywany, did you recieve any discs with the system? If so, is there one that indicates anything referring to tools? There should be a re-install disc in your computer "package." I would then un-install the mouse program and re-install it (if you have the disc(s)).
