OK.... I know everyone says this but I am working on a friends computer. I know no one will believe that but anyways. I have a huge problem. Hes running windows xp an has had tons of crap ( spyware, malware, trojans, anything and everything) thrown on it[college roomates (myself included but thats another story)]. It would constantly restart and I got it running long enough to set it to go to the BSOD and install avast for a boot time scan. Well after the scan I restarted (it ran fine after the scan when it started). Now it won't even get into windows. It comes up with DrWatson Postmortom Debugger again and again. I got linux going on it from a cd hoping that I might be able to scan the hard drive with an anti virus/spyware program but then I realized that I'm not even sure you can do that. I am coming to you guys for answers. Is it possible to scan the windows files when your in linux and/or does anyone know how to get into windows so it can hopefully fix it in there? Suggestions are very welcome.

BTW My friend never made a backup disc or set up a restore point. And safe mode does the same thing as normal windows.
    Thanks in advance.
    Frustrated.

You would be better off trying to work on this in the Software Forum. Since the PC is not bootable, there is not much we can do for you until it is. You need to determine if the boot problem is due to registry corruption or Windows system file corruption.

For the first, the below would be the first step:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307545&sd=tech

For the second a Windows Repair or rebuild may be needed. See the below:

Either way it would be best to work this in the Software Forum. Even though there are ways that you could scan the drive using it as a slave in another PC or using a special boot disk like UBCD4Win that may still not cure the problem with booting.
