Biggest full Moon possible will be visible on March 19.
From Way Off Base at http://www.majorgeeks.com, today.

I was most interested in this part of the article. ""There were supermoons in 1955, 1974, 1992 and 2005. These years had their share of extreme weather and other natural events."

It's been a hell of a year (so far), around the world, for extreme weather. Earthquakes, fire, flood, cyclones, snowstorme, etc. :duck

Hmmm, I wonder! What do you think? :-D

Only about 5-6 hours after posting this thread, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 to 8.9 has hit Japan, also causing a tsunami with initial waves around 5-8 metres high (around 20 feet high). The photos and TV news reports are showing incredible photos of the initial inundation effect of the tsunami.

Nearly all the countries around the Pacific Ocean are on tsunami alert, or watch. The tsunami is expected to hit the eastern coast of OZ around midnight tonight (roughly 5 hours from now). Fortunately it loses height and power the further it moves from Japan

    Magnitude 8.9 earthquake rocks Japan

Only 1 death reported so far, so that is good news.

Best time to install Windows 7 SP1 at a full moon ;)

Weird on the New Age Forcast but can they just like Nostradamus be a blind guesitimate? not to take away from the disaster in Japan as I have friends out their at present (all ok) but these predictions are guesses, and if they come true woooo score but if not you have the caveat that it was a guess.

Oooo...got Dave all excited at the talk of lenses. :-D

I will. I've had a bit of success with moon shots (but more unsuccessful LOL). I'm hoping the weather works out. I love the idea of it being close.

Hey thats the photographer/Imager in me "photoporn", goes back years of working for that sort of small company called Kodak!

But i do love good pics, so do post them if you get any Laura as quality is not always important but the setup and positioning is, if you get my drift.

I hope the weather works out too as your photography is superb and look forward to seeing more.

    hahaha...'photoporn'. I like that. LOL

Usually, I am very cognizant about my composition. The moon, I try to get the best settings though for the most detail and clarity. We shall see.

Mmm do you use the rule of thirds at all? I found that when I started this in art school it was a good compositional option for photography as well as artwork.

Over many years I have observed that when we have a comet in the atmosphere, we usually have unfavorable weather. This supermoon just may be a wake up call since we have damaged this planet to a very fragile state.

Rules are to be broken Laura ;)

I personally have tried to follow it in composition but I dont think in all scenarios that it works well, so I normally take a set of pics with different compositions.

I agree with you... This planet is are host and we our damaging her without a second thought.

Many years ago, my thought was that our host is tired of us humans destroying her with our fumes and garbage and the like...so ..... she [our planet] will do everything to erradicated us one way or another. How unfortunate that humans cannot see the errors of their ways and see what is actually coming. :(

Our mother earth is angry.... heed her warning :crybaby

I dont think we are to a point, I think that we need to rationalise world events to a cause, while in majority of cases they are normal to the earth! I personally think we are on the cusp of a new ice age and its predicting our weather and events of late,

The planet will go through events in a natural way and we as technological folk need to pinpoint a cause, when its a natural event in which we have no control over.

Yep,it's happened before and it will happen again - with or without humans. Sometimes we give ourselves, (as a race/species), too much credit, as we're not as powerful and omnipotent as we like to think we are.
Will get the ol' telescope out and see if I can get some decent pics, too. That's if I get around to setting it up in time.
Yes Dave, a lot of Geologists and Meteorologists think that we are about due for another Ice Age. So don't throw away those ice skate and snow shoes just yet.;)

Will look forward to seeing any pics. from you Laura, as they are usually awesome.:cool

I don't think the earth is a sentient being, that can change the weather because it is 'unhappy'.

As far at the moon photos, it has long been a subject of mine with a lot of lens, and a lot of shots. Never got the 'shot' I want. I guy that used to work with me hooked his camera up to the telescope at the local university, got some killer shots of the moon.

I might have to did out my old SLR. Seems like I have at least a 200mm lens, and one or 2 2x adapters.

Ditto. We do not cause earthquakes. This is a natural occurrence that has happened over and over again, and will continue to occur. There is no doubt that we, as humans, do damage to the earth, but putting natural disasters on us isn't realistic.

So you take the shots with your telescope, Phantom? Wow...I'd love to see that!

Thank you for your compliment too.:)

Barry I totally agree with your post and I do think like you we give ourselves too much credit for buggering up this planet, some if not alot of it is natural occurances.

I'll try that. Thanks, Phantom. Thinking I'll test out a few settings. I think a lot of times I have my aperture set too open as well.

First see what your setting are in normal mode. Then put it on aperture and set to F16 or F22. Bracket around that setting. If you have a shutter release cord, all the better as some of the shutter speeds could be very slow. You want to over expose it ( probably by 2 stops ) as your camera will try to expose for gray. ;)

  24. LauraR

LauraR MajorGeeks Super-Duper Administrator Staff Member

That's what I figured I'd try. I'll set to aperture priority mode (I figured on F16. I'll try up to F22 though) and see what it comes up with for shutter speed.

I always shoot with my tripod and remote when I'm doing anything like the moon or macro where detail is everything. ;)

Yes, those are a must!! Just be aware that with a black background and white object, it will try to meter at gray scale. So you need to overexpose the shot. ;)

As far as ISO for shooting, depends on the brightness of your lens. I would shoot with the aperature one or two stops from wide open, unless you are doing multiple subjects and need the DOF. The moon is moving, and using a long lens can amplify any camera shake.

Even using a tripod and shutter release, I would go for a wider aperature/shorter exposure, but would shoot 400 ISO or lower, probably 200 ISO or less, depending on the camera setup. This is baring any major film breakthroughs since I was shooting. Digital camera, same basic thing.

Of course, if you want to experiment, setup multiple camera setups, and shoot them all that night. ;)

  36. LauraR

I don't like using too high of an ISO because then you get too much noise, so I'll go no higher than 400 or so.

Interesting on your view on aperture, though, Fred. I have a friend who does great moon shots. I think he goes F8-F16. I wouldn't go any more open than that.

From what I remember, most lens do poorly with the aperature fully open. But, if you are not using depth of field, why use a slower shutter speed on a albeit slowly moving, but a moving object. Just my rambling, like I stated before, the moon has often been a subject, never have been able to get the picture I want. I think I need a telescope mounted camera to get what I want. :-D

I agree, the human race can not create natural occurrences. The human race is responsible for the damages to the earth that affects how the earth will hold up against these events. When you empty fluids from the earth and leave empty pocket which creates a weak spot. When you mine the earth for it's precious and very strong minerals, you create more weak spots. A solid mass is much stronger than a mass full of holes and air pockets, The human race is a destructive force.

I can only find one 135mm lens, thought I had a bigger lens. Oh well, will grab a roll of film, new battery for the camera, and shoot a few times. I did find one 2X converter, so I will be shooting with a 270mm lens. :-D

It was an amazing sight about 5.45pm GMT:)Coming home down the motorway the moon was coming up behind me just above the horizon about 15 degrees and the sun was in front of me going down gain at about 15 degree's and they both looked huge.

It was strange because it was still extremely well lit in the setting evening sun but the moon was still incredibly bright.

I actually commented on the size of them both especially the moon as I didn't know anything special was happening.

    Looking forward to tonight.:)
